Worth getting a Wizard MCII KT-150?

I own a KT150 HR, a Hellion, and owned a MCII MK2 KT150. and The Kt150 is definitely the move for wizards- tighter, punchier, and more cutting than the non KT150 ones I've tried- both were tighter than even the Hellion- Particularly the HR, but even the MCII had cutting mids- Im not sure what some other people have experienced, but IMO KT150 Wizards are the best ones.
Yours is the only KT version I’ve tried so far, but would definitely agree based on that one. Smoked the EL34 MTL and MC I had. I thought I could finally cross Wizard off my list until trying that HR KT150 lol

Brainy, were you at all tempted to order an EL34 Hell Razor?
I thought about it, but the KT version was a safer bet since I got to actually try one. Maybe if I live with the KT150 version long enough and sell enough stuff I might consider it

It seems though like the KT version might just play better to Wizard’s natural strengths: punch, power, clarity, definition, openness. Even with EL34’s I bet I’d probably still feel it lacks a real midrange growl or complex/rich of tone in that area vs Marshall’s or some of my other amps that really excel there and likewise don’t think it would still get super tight or sharp the way Hermansson’s or Dino’s can, but still plenty tight vs almost anything else lol

Yeah, I can see those Herms being maybe too tight for me possibly? The Hellion I just got it definitely tighter with more attack than any Wizard I've owned, but their is a warmth or organic quality mixed with the tightness that the MCII has when boosted that no other amp I've owned exhibits. It's just like the name implies...Modern Classic. Not too tight, not too metallic sounding, no overly modern clank that some amps have.
It’s possible they could be. You’d just have to try one and see. There’s little to no warmth the way Hermansson’s get voiced with so much low mids getting sucked out (probably part of shaping that sharp, trebly voicing they tend to have), but they still generally have imo an organic sound as long as the donor amp is vintage or an amp that just sounds organic (aka very few amps that aren’t vintage)

Interesting, my experience is opposite. I've had eleven non KT150 Wizards and one KT150 MCII MK2 and every non KT150 Wizard has been tighter, faster tracking, sharper attack. The Hellion I have is tighter and sharper than any Wizard I've owned. Show's how all our perceptions of these things differ.
It might be that regardless of tube type the Hell Razor is just a tighter sounding Wizard model. I would be curious to hear an EL34 version as a comparison. That’s part of why it impressed me so much since I generally agree about EL34’s vs KT88’s or 6550’s comparing that way. It just seemed to have more of everything I liked about the other Wizards I had before that were all EL34 powered

I'd bet it's just inherent to the amps design rather than tubes.

I see exactly what you mean. It’s likely the KT HR will be more like freshly squeezed juice from oranges grown at the prestigious Butrico Groves in Mims, FL while the EL34 HR is akin to the slightly more pedestrian oranges grown at Dooley Groves in Ruskin, FL. :D

Yeah the descriptions guys tend to give about Wizards also gave me a different expectation than how they really sound. The Hell Razor KT150 I tired was tighter and more aggressive than the MTL EL34 and MC EL34 I had, but they still all have some roundness to the attack and that smooth, more neutral midrange that doesn’t really growl or get as aggressive in that frequency range. The HR KT150 was way bigger than the MTL and MC 34’s I had
But see Matt Henson says the opposite that’s my point. Neither of you are wrong . You just like different.i have always felt Ricks best was with el34 and lost money trying the other tubes in them because they’re something missing in them non el34 wizards . I learned a lesson and moved on . My choice , Matt’s choice ,and your choice is not a race to see who is right all the time . There’s just alot of great shit out now and some of it is way too close to call. For example I’ve played many 2c+ and 2c++ and wizards ALWAYS destroy them in every way for me . Does that mean Wizard is better than boogie 2c++ . No . Just lots of good different shit. Plus a person needs to prove they can get a good tone with amps before you prove one is better than the other . Like I have no idea if you can get a good tone . So how can you say it’s better . Msybe you just didn’t dial your amps right like this other guys hell razor . I’m not saying that’s the case but I see that shit a lot .like I can tune a stealth in and sound better than my friends $5000 hermanson. Is my stealth better ? No it’s not .

Matt hasn’t had the KT150 Hell Razor. He had a 60w KT66 version. Wizards vs Mark IIC+’s are completely different flavors. Neither can do what makes the other great. I don’t need to prove anything. I just simply share my opinions based on comparisons I’ve made. If you feel differently that’s cool. Plenty of guys I’ve met here and played each other’s gear have seen the way I dial in amps. I don’t do anything unusual really. I just try to play to as best I can what I feel an amp’s inherent strengths are

I actually am planning to make some comparison clips of various amps, just gotta get better recording skills, but I never seem to get around to it since my priority is classical

I'd bet it's just inherent to the amps design rather than tubes.
For many qualities I’d think so like the extra tightness, gain, aggression, more modern, but with how much more muscular/bigger/more powerful it sounded I’d think it’s at least partially gotta be the plate voltage or transformers designed around the tubes. I would agree that just KT88’s alone might not make it that much bigger, but who knows. I just know what I heard and it was very impressive

I took down any classical clips I made since the quality wasn’t there, but in a few weeks hope to record some much improved ones and that I actually get around to doing lol

I did like your classical clips allot , pretty great stuff

An EL34 HR could be just as good or better for all I know, but the KT one I felt made more sense for now. I would envision it more like if wizards are grapefruits and Marshall’s are oranges, the KT150 HR is going all out at being a grapefruit, while I’d imagine a 34 version being a grapefruit that’s a bit closer to being an orange, but it’s still a grapefruit, but I don’t know, it would be cool to hear all the versions, it’s just expensive lol

Definitely. But man you should post your classical videos on here . People would be blown away by that

Thank you! You had some very cool clips too
Why did you take them down . Like I said there was one clip I wanted to know the name but you took it down . I have clue what it was called but when you put clips up again I’ll let you know which one . But I wondered why you did t post your classical clips .they are preset insane .

Because my teacher had been busting my ass lately and I’m much more aware now of what needs to be done to improve the pieces I’m working on. In the classical guitar world it still wouldn’t show me at the level I’m looking to be at. I can pm them if you want to know the name of a specific piece

Definitely send me some for sure

Years ago I took all my Marshalls and swapped them over to 6550’s and or KT88’s. Whatever was available, there were no EL34’s for awhile. I was never a fan of them once the Mullards were gone. In those amps that were setup for el34’s there was a tiny bit better bass response, not much else.
Same thing with my UL that had the 6L6 / KT88 switch. With 6L6, Not alot of difference but a decrease in low end response by a little. If the amp is setup for KT88’s they do have a much bigger soundstage, whether it is what is desired by the player is up to them.
That UL was a massive sounding amp at gigs.

I really think more people need to try out a Hellion. It’s the tightest amp I have owned when compared to some other heavy hitters. Never against a Wizard but it’s also not the first time I have heard someone say this.
