This is for you techno/gizmos . :D

Some of you may know that my wife, Arlene, suffers from MS. She's been having trouble using her cell phone lately because of the lack of feeling in her finger tips. We checked out the iPhone with its touch screen and discovered that she's much more able to use that type of phone.

We want to check out the competition before we decide to buy. I see that Palm has the "Pre" and that there are other models out there with the same basic functionality.

What are your experiences with these types of phones? Do you have any recommendations and why?

Can't speak for the Pre but I love my iphone...left verizon to go to AT&T and don't regret it. The phone just rules in every way. I tried the Blackberry Storm (another touch screen) a few times and didn't like it at all.

I have the iPhone myself, I thought the on screen keyboard would be a pain to use, but its actually really easy to use and I can type pretty fast on it. Doesn't really take much effort to type on the iPhone so that would be a good choice. The full web browser and all the apps makes the iPhone hard to beat

+1 to the iPhone

I like my iPhone, but I don't really use it as a phone. It spends most of its time as an iPod/RDC/Web Browser.

I want an iPhone :( Have to wait or "buy out" my current contract to go to At&t though

Same here, I use it for everything but a phone

The iPhone is nice, but the plan is a bit pricey if that's all you're doing with AT&T. If you're a Sprint person.....try the new Instinct S30 from Samsung. Sprint's SimplyEverythingPlan gives you unlimited everything for $99 a month. (many people pay $130 for their iPhone plan). If you're already with AT&T and want a better plan, try the new Samsung Eternity. I think it's the best touch-screen phone out there.
PS> I swear I don't work for Samsung!!

The thing I like about the iphone is it can use wi-fi or the cell network. Where I work, cell signal is almost non-existent but we have wi-fi. That's what intrigues me most about it.....that and just a slew of apps for it. Since I already use itunes and have AT&T for my home phone and internet, it seems like it might be worth looking into?

Sorry for the hijack amiller :aww:

Hey, it's the same subject...the more info the better. :D

I have the HTC mogul.... which has now been replaced by the HTC touch pro. I love my Mogul, i have the slingbox, navigation, google maps, internet, email, instant messenger, video camera, camera w/ flash, its great. Great apps for it to ...cheaper then the iphone

I have a samsung instinct. I hate it. I supposedly live in an area with great reception according to the shitty sprint map. However, in a building i'm lucky to get a signal enough for a text message let alone a signal to try to make a call or use the browser or anything.

If I were you i'd go with an iPhone. The iPod touch I have makes me want to switch.

I've had an iPhone since day one and wouldn't trade it for the world. I work for At&t and have had blackberrys and other "smart" phones, but the iPhone is stupid easy to use and has way too many benefits over the other phones IMO.
Apple will always keep it on the edge of consumer tech and it will eventually cross over to other providers.

If your wife is going to use it as a phone more than a computer check out LG. They have a touch screen cell phone without all the extra apps and browser capabilities.

Of the choices and requirements, it sounds like iPhone works well for your wife

However, Sprint is offering the beginnings of 4G networking, so it may be worth checking them out. I have an iPhone and a Blackberry Pearl. I hate the Blackberry, worst handset I've every had, the older Palm phones were easier to use.

If I had to buy a smart phone today, I'd look at Sprint, due to 4G, and Atlanta (where I live) is one of the launch cities (not surprising as it is a major homebase of what was once Cingular, now ATT wireless). Look at the pre, instinct s30, etc. at Sprint too.

FWIW. Circa 2000 or so, I worked with major carriers in North America, UK and Asia on the design and development of the 3G software data platform (WAP 2.0 based software stack) for handsets, and the end-to-end communications and OTAP (over the air provisioning), etc.,. In all cases, it is a combination of what the network can provide (speed, bandwidth, coverage area, etc.), server side capabilities (carrier and third-party), the handset's ability to take advantage of them and handset local processing power. Its basically a client-server network. The net of this ramble, is you want the best network regardless of phone, first. Then, select the phone with the features that meet your needs and wallet.

Why? Imagine having the fastest most powerful Mac or PC or *nix box and posting / listening to clips / videos using a dial-up modem instead of broadband. That's the network! :)

Disclosure: I'm not working for or with any wireless carriers today.

I have an Iphone and wouldnt switch to anything else in the world. Its intuitive, and extremely easy to navigate. Plus the endless amounts of applications astound me each day.

+1 on the Iphone tuner!

My wife had the Curve and wanted the touchscreen Storm so we got that. She hated it so badly (because it was hard to type on) that she sold it and went back to the Curve. We're locked into Verizon so the iPhone isn't an option, but if I had to do it all over again I'd get the iPhone.
