Would you consider Andy Timmons on the same lovel as Satch?

I've been listening to Satch for years and just got into Timmons in the past year. They are both monster players and can write some pretty catchy instrumental songs. But as highly regarded as Satch is as a player, I've never hear him do anything that blew me away as far as technique or skill. But some of the stuff Timmons does blows me away.

Here's a vid of them playing together

I think Andy is a much better player than Satch & doesn't play as many cheesy lines.

Agreed. I love satch but I think Timmons is a more accomplished player and has more tools/patterns and dynamics to his playing.

+1

Andy is a great player and is less noisey if you will. Great tone also. That being said, I don't think there's a instrumental guitarist out there that comes close to being as prolific as Satriani. He's written some great melodies over the years, especially in the last 10 years which has been his best stuff in my opinion. Some of the early tunes were corny songs and he was making some kinda noise every second of every beat...I'd say from Is there love in space on he's really had his best stuff. Plus those chickenfoot albums are killer also

I love Timmons, but I'm going with Satch on this one. Taught and inspired many players, Timmons included, started the shred instrumental genre with 1985's Not of This Earth, is the #1 selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time, and the list goes on.

Satriani. He also had the benefit of timing. He hit at the right time, as did Eric Johnson (although he's a different type of artist).
Satch has been brilliant with the G3 concerts over the years and has had great success. He's more than just a guitar player. He's a wise businessman.

If I had to pick one. I vote Andy. He has the whole package. The tone, the feel, the melody, the technique and the songs. Never cared for satch's tone and although he has some good tunes, I zone out on a lot of his stuff.

Depends on what "level" you mean. Satriani paved the way for instrumental shredder music and brought it commercial appeal. He has a carved-out style all his own. This is not unlike EVH and say, Steve Vai. EVH paved the way and his tone/playing are widely recognizable in three notes. Steve Vai can play circles around EVH, technically, but is not a household name and did not pave the way for a genre.

If you are talking from a technical perspective, Timmons' technique is probably more diverse than Satriani's.

Totally dig Andy Timmons, by the way -- met him and his very tall wife a couple of times and they were both super kind. We used to have the same hair guy in Dallas, so whenever I'd get my haircut, the guy was always playing Timmons' CDs.

I consider Satch the Godfather of Instrumental Rock Guitar. So I don't really try to compare anyone to him (even though he's not my favourite). Kinda like saying is XXXXX on the same level as Black Sabath.

I'd have to go with Timmons, the guy is simply awesome - I kinda quit listening to Satch after Surfing with the Alien. Some of the stuff that came after Surfing sounded too much like movie theme song music to me. That said, the two times I've seen him live, it's been great.

I consider Timmons to be a better all around player. He can play anything. Much better improviser. IMO.

Both are great, but I have been listening to more Timmons than Satch in the last five years.

I don't know about levels but I prefer Timmons compositions and diversity.

I'd say Timmons has better technique & tone, but I prefer Satriani's actual music to his (though I really haven't heard much of Timmon's work beyond his Resolution album).

I love Satch. But few players inspire me as much as Andy Timmons does. Timmons inspires me more than even EVH and Petrucci and I consider them huge influences on me.

Satriani by a mile.......not even close. Satch has at least 30 to 40 tunes that I absolutely love. Dudes a master!

Timmons is a great player, but apart from Electric Gypsy(basically his Cliffs Of Dover), I haven't been moved by anything else he's written.

People can prefer any guitarist over another & that's perfectly fine, but Satch is a worldwide legend for a reason.

Satriani's legendary catalog of great guitar instrumentals, plus his influence on countless guitarists worldwide makes the question from the OP...."Is Timmons on the same level as Satriani", a laughable question. Andy would laugh at this himself!

This reminds me of a thread on here that tried to compare Vitto Bratta to EVH......lol
We all appreciate Bratta's great playing, but come on.............this thread makes as much sense as that one!

Take it easy man. No need to shit on my thread. It's a simple question.

Thanks for contributing.

So far you seem to be in the minority.
