Would you consider Andy Timmons on the same lovel as Satch?

I think Timmons is definitely on the same level, especially if we're considering tone/phrasing/musicianship. They're both excellent players. I wouldn't say one is "better" than the other though.

If we're considering how influential they've been to the guitar/music community though, Satriani is obviously miles ahead.

I'd guess if you asked most professional Instrumental Rock Guitarists they'd ALL say Satch is THE Man.

I like Timmons but he hasn't accomplished anything on the level Satch has. Maybe Andy can pick through patterns and scales better but are we still living in 1987? I thought that stuff didn't matter anymore. Like I said, I like Andy but wake me up when he writes an album like Crystal Planet.

I've been listening to Satch for years and just got into Timmons in the past year. They are both monster players and can write some pretty catchy instrumental songs. But as highly regarded as Satch is as a player, I've never hear him do anything that blew me away as far as technique or skill. But some of the stuff Timmons does blows me away.

Here's a vid of them playing together

Andy's tone must suck right? I mean, he's playing an Ibanez through a Mesa! Surelt everyone here has better tone with their modded Marshalls, 4K imports, profilers or modelers. What's Timmons thinking playing Mesa?

Andy Timmons by a mile. I don't care about accomplishments. When I listen to Andy's music, I am moved.

I prefer Satch overall and really respect his huge body of work. I like Timmon's Resolution album, but not much else.

I also have to add that Andy Timmons is ONE OF THE BEST at playing live. I first saw him at thoroughbred music in 1994. Didn't know who he was. Then I saw that he was in Danger Danger and almost walked away. Turned out to be one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Check the videos on YouTube. Hiroshima in particular. Higher level even then than Satriani Nothing against satch. Great player but after the extremist I checked out. Satch needs to do a G3 with Timmons and Govan

I dig them both. For me, once an artist gets to a certain point it's not about comparing anymore. It's just simply about taste...what floats your boat at the moment. In my case, I like em both. I may listen to one more than the other for awhile but then flip at some point. It's great to have SOOOOO many incredible artists to listen to. Right now I'm into Andy Timmons in Protocol III...killer, killer, killer!

LOL. It's not even a new Ibanez. And the pickguard is broken.

Andy is a great player and is less noisey if you will. Great tone also. That being said, I don't think there's a instrumental guitarist out there that comes close to being as prolific as Satriani.

Steve Va??

My opinion is that Andy is definitely on the same level playing wise as Satch. I think anyone who plays professionally as a solo artist/guitarist has to have the chops to command an audience and both have a considerable following. No doubt that they play at a level that we all strive to achieve. I believe that answers the OP's question.

In terms of who is better.... how do you measure that and in the end, does it matter?

I saw a documentary recently on Kobe Bryant and he talked about how he wanted to implement techniques from all of the players he idolized into his own game. I respect and take a page from Eddie's book for his rhythmic timing, Yngwie's smooth vibrato, Satch's melodic sensibility, Vai's clean fretboard work and EJ's ability to incorporate a wide range of technique into his playing. I love Andy's playing and song writing BUT there's not much from Mr. Timmons that I can say is uniquely his.

I agree with most of what you said except for the above sentence. I think Andy's phrasing and note choice IS uniquely his. If fact, that's the thing I enjoy the most about his playing.

I really enjoy the work of both of them but I am a Satch fan.

both are great, i wouldnt choose i just enjoy both their playing

I like Timmons more, saw him at a small clinic when I was 16 or 17 and he put on a hell of a performance.

As a player, yes. As a songwriter, no. I love them both. Andy's tone and feel is some of the best in the world, but for songs I can listen to day after day and don't get sick of its Satch. As far as instrumental songwriting Satch is the master.

I agree with the above. I used to live in Dallas in the 90's and went to see Andy play at small bars....his note choices and technique will blow you away in person!!
