I had a T-50 that was modded my Mike Soldano. Extensively modded I might add. I know he did a depth mod on it, installed a choke, and a bunch of other stuff. It was incredible sounding and everyone I knew was hounding me to sell it to them. One day some idiot offered me stupid money for it so I sold it.
I would have liked to hear that amp, post-mod. Installing a choke makes a huge difference for sure. I'm waiting on an OEM choke from Martin Kidd for my Cornford head. I was going to go with a Soldano SLO value choke, but Martin recommended an alternate value for the Cornford circuit.

You can find interviews with Mike Soldano where does say he was disappointed in the way that Yamaha cut corners on the final production amp.

I had a T50 head and a T100 combo. Really nice amps. Built for the long run. I kinda miss the head for sure...

If you've ever played a Soldano SP-77, that's a LOT of what you'll be hearing with the Yamahas.

Bill's awesome. Seems like one of the nicest guys in rock and a consummate pro.

While I was going to go check out the head, I pulled some tubes from my Krankenstein because the owner said the head was popping during idle time and he believed it to be the tubes. I proceeded to drop one on the floor, so I had to order a new set for the Krankenstein which limits my funds to pick one of these up. I was not a happy camper!

He is in person as well. I met him after a show in 2010, really nice and loved talking gear. He was using a rented JCM900 and the yellow boss OD, with the green line 6 delay and sounded amazing, which goes to show you that it's in the hands as much as the gear. I was really impressed with CJ that night, as it was still in a smoking facility that had low ceilings and around 800 people, so he was in the thick of it. He still hit all of the notes, but afterwards he hardly had a voice left to talk. Any way, if you ever get a chance to see them live, the still put on a great show and are really down to earth and appreciate all of the fans.

Regarding Bill Leverty of Firehouse

Not only is he using the Yamaha live, but he's also mixing in a Mesa Studio Pre..pretty cool. But that recorded tone for both albums was SLO, Marshall and Fender. Tracked 12 times.....goes to show you just can't duplicate recorded tone, rendering most of our tone chasing useless..

I have the combo and it's fantastic! You've just reminded me to put some new tubes in it and get it rolling again. Good cleans, good crunch, not much in between (which is fine with me). Jump on it!

How would you describe the crunch? I'm more of a seriously insane type of crunch guy, mean this get anywhere close, even if it had to be boosted, or is it more of an OD?

Big fat low ballzy crunch....much like an older MesaBoogie D.R. on red channel. No pedal push needed at all...but like I said....it loses itself when you try to back that off and get a good mid-crunch sound, but the clean channel is great and easy to grit up a bit with a pedal to get that sort of thing.

Bring a cab you know and try it!
