So, I was looking at the used guitars on GC's website and saw one I was interested in. It was listed as in good condition which under GC's definition means that it has scratches, dents, dings, etc on it. Of course the pics online do not show any of that so I called the store to ask about the condition of the guitar. The sales rep just gives me the definition of what GC considers good condition. I tell him I understand that but wanted to know if there was any damage to the back of the neck or significant damage to the guitar. He said it had multiple dings on the body and scratches on the neck. I asked if I could get some better photos sent to my phone and he said no because they would not show up in the photos. I have purchased numerous used items online from GC and they have always sent me additional pics if I requested to see the condition of the item. I could tell the sales rep was just being lazy and didn't feel like doing it. How hard is it to take a couple of pics on your phone and send them out? Would take less than 5min. I know I could purchase the guitar and return it, but I would lose the shipping fees and don't want to go through the hassle of getting a guitar that has damage that I can't see until I receive it. I guess this isn't a ding on GC, just this asshole that works there.

you can recoup the shipping fees if you make the argument that the pics shown online didn't show the damage/ wear .... if your unhappy with it of course
I've done this with guitars and amps and even a pedal or two .
they can refund the shipping .... you just need a valid reason ... that wasn't shown in the ad .

I got a gj2 from gc . On the phone the guy said it was great, that he went over it top to bottom. It showed up beat to hell, the neck has a bad twist in it. Took it to the Columbus gc . They said they could fix it, lol a week later it was in just as bad of shape.

"We can fix it" Yeah, like you should have when it came in and before you sent it to me.

Here is a Musician's Friend/Guitar Center nightmare that happened. My friend got a new Epiphone Les Paul Standard '60s Quilt Top Limited-Edition Electric Guitar Faded Cherry Sunburst from Musician's Friend & it was shipped from Guitar Center Fairlawn.

The guitar arrived destroyed, with a huge chunk of wood chipped out of the back of the neck and the actual neck was split and the fretboard was separated from the neck. There were some other chips chunked out of it too.

Guitar Center Fairlawn stole all the case candy and wrenches and books and everything and shipped it in a Taylor box.

Musician's Friend was called and they found another one at Guitar Center in Mayfield, Ohio - the destroyed one was exchanged. No one could figure out what Guitar Center Fairlawn must have been thinking.

The Guitar Center in Mayfield, Ohio found all the case candy and wrenches and books and everything.

The real Epiphone Les Paul guitar case for it was bought from American Musical Supply.

Bro, you just described 99.9% of the flunkies who staff guitar center.

My brother and I were at GC SF a few weeks back, half the employees were outside smoking cigs and getting super high when we walked up. The other half ignored us when we walked in. They could not answer any questions and didn’t want to get up and help. This is the new normal for GC.

They really need a “My salesman was a choad” policy to negate shipping charges.

Incredibly hard , impossible actually because that would require the employee to get out of his chair which is brutal enough but he would also have to walk over to where the guitar is located and then search for his cell phone . GC employee's just will not make that type of effort , they don't get paid enough .

I've only bought from GC online once. Epiphone Les Paul Trad IV in Pacific Blue. Brand new. Saw it and had to have it. They packed it very well and it got to me in perfect condition. I was hesitant because of the horror stories, but I lucked out.

BTW, these are great guitars out of the box and an excellent mod platform as well. 60's style neck. They have a real maple cap, not a veneer. The maple cap on these isn't as thick as a Gibson, but at the price I won't complain. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Epipho...lue-1500000327512.gc?cntry=us&source=4WWRWXGP

I can throw same hate to GC as a whole, but a lot of times its not really the policies. It usually comes down to the individual store or even employee being a turd.
Yep. Some are dicks, some are helpful. If you wanna be a dick, I'll tell them to shove it right up their ass. But, even the helpful ones get it into the hands of dipshits that don't know how to pack, so I just developed "don't buy GC used" policy. Fuck them. And Fuck MF too. You order a new guitar from them, you get a wall-hanger from GC, a return, or open box. Like I said. Fuck GC, Fuck MF.

Another vote for "people are the weak spot". Last time I talked to an MF rep, he made a point of telling me to specifically call and ask to make sure I wasn't getting one of those not-new-but-sold-as-new items when I was looking at purchasing stuff in the future. It's stupid that it's necessary, but points to him for giving me the heads up. On the flip side I've had a GC employee tell me flat out that a Y-cable (either series or parallel, I forget) wasn't electrically possible and that they didn't carry them. :bash:

I have countless GC horror stories. I’m a big nerd and keep all of this stuff in a spreadsheet. Here are the current stats:

134 total orders since 2016 and I’m sure you can imagine the cost
Out of those, 60 had some kind of problem which resulted in some kind of corrective action. Such as, forgot power cable, forgot case for the guitar, broken strings, broken tubes, etc. That’s a 52% failure rate. I also consider the *multiple* times one of my orders was cancelled out of the blue and when I pressed them, they told me it “caught on fire.” After I heard that one for the third time, it’s a bit hard to believe. Most of the time these are easily solved though, they just send the missing item or whatever at their expense.

Out of those, a further 38 orders had what I mark as a “major” issue. This includes egregiously bad packaging jobs, outright broken and damaged gear, cracked head shells due to their fault and not the shipper, broken headstocks, broken bridges, completely wrong item sent, and all sorts of asinine stuff. These are full or partial refunds.

So we can say it’s down to the stores or individual people all we want, but the reality is that the store policies/processes contribute to this lack of accountability. Yes there is a 45 day return policy (only 3 days for Vintage gear by the way, so you’d better check for a warped necks the day something shows up or you’re boned) but that is their ONLY good policy. They will refund shipping if the problem is obviously their fault, but I’ve been lectured by people at my local GC who refused to refund shipping or tell me that returning an obviously broken thing is going to get my account banned from future purchases. I just smile and then call the customer service line and they refund the shipping for me then.

Anyway, I still cruise their listings a lot because it’s a good way to find good gear for cheap. The same lack of accountability that results in all of the problems is also how I’ve gotten a vintage JCM800 for $550, Mesa triple rec Rev G for $780, a Kramer Stagemaster for $750, a Charvel model 5A for $500 and other ridiculous deals. I just always assume there’s a 50/50 chance it’s going to just waste my time and gas money driving it back to my local GC.

One short story. I once wanted a Fender Super Sonic combo, back when the 60w was the only version. I bought one from GC online and instead, a red knob Super 60 showed up. Anyway I returned it but I saw that same Super 60 pop back up at more than 5 different Gc’s a few months apart. They spent more money shipping that amp all over and getting it returned than the amp even cost (it was $399 which was a great deal if it were a super sonic, so it got purchased a lot). All of that could’ve been fixed by one person fixing the picture/title. I just don’t get it. And I still see this happen by the way, there is a Blankenship plexi I used to own that’s back on there and I’ve seen returned at least twice. There’s also a Mesa Mk IV rack mount head in a brown tolex rack shell that has completely blown caps on the main pcb that I saw again for the 4th time that just disappeared again, likely on its way to another buyer they hope will just not bother to return it.

This.

I've good experiences too. I believe it comes down to the store manager - just like fast food :dunno:

When I bought a used Mesa Trad 4x12 from them locally, they took the time to take the handles off and get pics of the speakers - which was nice of them.

It just depends on the store, and the person you talk to. I probably have over 3-400 purchases since 2011. I’ve kept a bunch, and returned a bunch. I’ve never had a problem with guys taking pics but I have with the pack jobs. Florida stores seem to be the worst packers.
But, at least when they F it up you can return it easily enough.

I called a store the other day to ask for dimensions on a short scale guitar for my son (none were available online) and I also asked how much the guitar weighed. The guy said "About 20 lbs" I bought it. It weighed 4.

Should have casually strolled out with a guitar.

My experience with Guitar Center in the modern era has been about 50/50. 50% Bad and 50% Mediocre.
