You ever just get frustrated about gear?

I'm frustrated right now.

I'm frustrated because I've failed to fix my 6505+ in the 4 months I've been experiencing this oscillation issue. I've tried COUNTLESS things, replaced a dozen components, swapped tubes, etc. And Now I have to take it to a tech. The nearest tech I can find wants $100 an hour to fix this amp. I'm tempted to just pull the tubes out and take my sledgehammer to this fucking thing.

I'm frustrated because I'd like it to be 3 channels instead of 2.

I'm frustrated because I lack the technical knowledge to fully understand what I'm looking at when I have my chassis out, and know what purpose each component serves in the sound. I know a bit, but obviously not enough to fix what the fuck is wrong with it.

I'm frustrated because part of me just wants a new amp, and every asshole selling an amp on craigslist wants a retarded amount of money and doesn't want trades, and every dicknose on Ebay is charging $100 for shipping and trying to get 3/4 retail price for what they're selling (literally selling. Apparently no one knows how to auction anything on ebay anymore).

And I'm frustrated... REALLY frustrated that the amp I want more than any other.. the Diezel Herbert, is so unwaveringly far out of my price range that I can't even save up for the goddamn thing without it taking probably a year or more.

Today is not a good day.

If you can save enough for a Herbie in a year then you've got me beat. :(

I want a Herbie so damn bad.....but that price just seems too far out of reach for me. I know that they are killer and worth it.....but I am freaking BROKE most of the time!

I will say it will be my next amp!
Might be 3 years down the road....but its my next one.

If I get frustraded with gear......Just walk away from it. at least for today.
Go back with a fresh mind and a Baseball bat in one hand if that dont work!

sometimes you just have to be thankful for what you have in life

Have you thought of sending it to FJA mods? He could probably fix it, offers some killer mods for 6505+'s that make them sound killer, and he has one to make it 3 channels.

oh, boo freaking hoo.

play the amp. use a pedal for the third channel. adapt. improvise. save up, man up. there is no crying in amps!

I thought about it, but I'm a good 2300 miles from Jerry. The shipping alone would be hell on my wallet. I only paid $650 for the amp. I'd end up paying damn near that much if not all of it for repair plus mods and shipping. :aww:

I just got a Rivera KR7 and its the best amp ever to come across my cab.
Not sure how the other Rivera's are.....but this amp is super good quality and sound!

I'll look into them. I was also interested in the Diamond Nitrox at one point.

its almost impossible to troubleshoot parasitic oscillations without a grasp in electronics.

and if you are shotgunning that amplifier, its no surprise you're pissed off at all. you try shotgunning anything and you are bound to get pissed off.

shotgunning is a troubleshooting technique indeed, but its nowhere near the best nor the cheapest solution.

hell i'm having to replace a few diodes for a dumbass mistake i made. completely my fault though, and i wasnt paying attention.

i just know i wont do it again - live learn and move on.

as far as the problem goes, you would almost instantly want an oscilloscope to troubleshoot and trace the ringing down with the power tubes pulled, and the amplifier all the way on. you would want to start narrowing down components using deductive logic and reasoning.

that alone takes years to perfect. if you dont have the patience to do so starting off you will pull your hair out in an instant. im not saying im anywhere near perfect - but thats the honest truth.

if you dont have access to the tools you need, then you cant see what you need to see.

i have a good idea what is wrong with it still. i can PM you a few ideas if you are interested. but othewise if you are frustrated you wont touch it anymore dont let it get to you and just send it off to peavey. i know they charge $60 an hour, but rarely do they ever take more than that. i have sent off a few pieces i didnt have time to fix and their packaging on the way back is excellent.

While I enjoy my 6505+ alot, life to too short to deal with an amp that isn't working properly.

Nothing kills my creative mood more than malfunctioning gear with hard to diagnose problems. In the past when I have had amps with "gremlins" that were beyond the local tech's capability to accurately identify I gladly took a loss and dumped the amp and never looked back.

Get rid of it for a loss, just disclose upfront the true condition of the amp and some greedy smuck on Craigslist who thinks he can fix it will crawl up to your door to snatch it.

If you aren't in a band get something cheap to tide you over while you save up for what you really want.

Good luck.

Just get it fixed by a tech. When its working again, then decide if you want to sell it. What you put into the amp so far is a sunk cost. Its now time to spend the money and get it working. Then make up your mind what to do with it.....

dont do it, I have never heard a diamond that sounded good IMO.

I would sell it as is and move on. Your right about shipping and fixing costs.
Would be the same price as a new/different amp or really close.
Shipping back/forth on a amp would be about $100 plus.
Unless you get it fixed local then you said the guy wants 100 an hour?
I have seen some 5150 in good working order for less than 500 a few times.
Unless it has sentimental value....I would sell it and move on.
But thats how I roll!

Sell it as-is. As a project for a amp repairman. Or, try to find a local tech who would want to buy it and sell it at a profit.

You will always get more if the amp is working, usually it even covers the repair cost.

True....
maybe someone here would be willing to fix it for a decent price?
100 an hour just seems like a lot. Is that the going rate?

Techs around here charge a minimum $100 but that doesn't mean it's $100 an hour.
I'm sure you can find someone a little more reasonable.
