Not stupid if the government wants to tie this into a AI social credit system with restrictions on driving due to climate change and energy reductions for the regular populace that aren't 1% Billionaires.

Of course the 1% will still have their Lambo's and private jets but they supposedly will be buying carbon credits to offset their carbon production.

This actually passed in 2021 in one of those Omnibus bills that the congress is not allowed to read before they pass it to of course fund the government in emergency because the congress DOES NOT pass individual approrpiation bills like they are supposed to. Both side have been doing this for a very long time.............It's a BIG CLUB and the citizens are NOT IN THE BIG CLUB.

Where did it originate though? Was it road safety organisations calling for it, automotive industry?

There would be rural roads people drive where they might not see another car for days with no reception, unlucky if the car wants to shut off.

Yep, this is 100% about control. Nearly everyone who gets a DUI has to use those things, and they have been around forever.
