Jerry Reed (RIP)...

Good call, can't believe he hasn't been mentioned earlier.
As someone who grew up knowing him from Smoky and the Bandit, I dug in and learned more about him when he died and I heard about some of his guitar work. Talk about impressed. There's more than one video where he makes Chet Atkins look weak on guitar - and that's no small feat.

I still say parts of Amos Moses are practically impossible to sing and play at the same time. :scared:

Jerry was awesome.

Chris Feener!!! I just discovered this guy and hell he's one of the better guitarists I've encountered...

Diggin' on the Damon Johnson love! One of the guys that pushed me to be melodic lead guitar player.

Mikael Akerfeldt is one of my favorite players. Opeth is a big band these days, but I don't ever see him hyped as a great player by non-fans.

I was just about to post this. Seriously under-appreciated player.

Fucking hell, I can't believe I forgot.

Keb Mo.

He's not totally obscure. He has his own Gibson acoustic, but he's not exactly on the cover of Guitar World these days.
I'm a blues guy at heart, no matter how br00tz I get otherwise. Keb's skill as a songsmith, vocalist and delta slide guitarist is just tits.

John Christ from early Danzig as his riffs were so dark an cool sounding an he can let loose killer solo's to boot. Wayne Kramer from mc5 is also cool

phil collen
mick ronson
paul kosoff
mick taylor
j. giles
phil campbell

+ 1 on Prince!

More "unnoticed" than "unpopular", but:

Keith Scott (Bryan Adams)
Dean DeLeo (STP)
Eric Schenkman (Spin Doctors) AWESOME chops.
Brett Garsed

mostly unnoticed for his guitar skills ..noticed more for his somgwriting & mystique i guess. He still can rip it up...and with soul power too!!! :D

TOSIN ABASI!!!!

holy smokes... he just blows my mind

Joe Haley

he just has such great runs for a guy that doesnt play any solo's in his music

Thanks for posting Tosin's work. I downloaded his CD and love it. Don't know how I haven't heard of this guy.

Again big thanks!

Misha from Periphery actually did his record :D
Misha did all the composition, tosin wrote the riffs and the solos. Its an amazing record. Misha isnt involved with the new one, so i am curious to hear what it sounds like

Myles Kennedy (greatly prefer his lead playing to Tremonti's in Alter Bridge)

Im a huge AB fan, Myles is a really good guitarist, a little more blues style lead than Tremonti. His addition to the guitar playing line-up definately improved the overall sound of the band both live and in the studio... but as far a pure skill, knowledge and chops I gotta say Tremonti IMHO. But I'm glad to see Myles gettin some credit cause he is awesome!!

Don't get me wrong though, I do dig Tremonti's playing, especially his songwriting. His riffs are ridiculous.
Whenever I hear Myles take a solo, it's different to the point where it gets my attention, his style works as a great contrast. A touch more melodic, and he stays away from the wah. lol

I'm going to check them live in May, either in Worcester or NYC.
