I agree about the singers...I think Gillan's voice and some cool writing carried that band. I appreciate Jake getting "classic" but his tone is fizzy and compressed on those recordings and even though he excels as a metal player he really hacks at bluesy rock lead playing....but that's not unusual for metal guys who try and swing. I bought a disc of him doing classic rock covers from a couple of years ago and they all pale in comparison to the original versions.
I've heard way too many guys on this forum play much better in that style. I enjoy Badlands (good songs and voice) but never liked his guitar tone. Even on Ultimate Sin it's overly saturated and fizzy (again I still like it because of the songs). I think it's just how he hears distorted guitar.

I thought Audley Freed at the time Cry Of Love debuted had such a great mix of a modern touch with a lot of ol' school feel. I wish Brother had been a touch bigger/ballsier sounding than it is, but it was a nice break from what was going on in '94.

I love Badlands and Jake's era with Ozzy is my favorite as well. Absolutely tasty licks! In fact, I am in the process of recording a clip of High Wire. I will post it when I have time to record it.

Oh yeah? Well YOU SUCK! Just kidding... I've heard alot of people say they liked Jake doing the bluesy rock stuff better than the Ozzy stuff. Go figure!

As far as his tone, yeah... That's really just a cranked up Super Lead type of tone with an OD or fuzz pedal here an there. He just never seems to dial it in for a good "punchy" AC/DCish type of tone. I used to have a similar problem with the SuperLead Reissue I had... It always got real fizzy and didn't nail that AC/DC tone I hear everyone else get. Not sure. I think part of it was that I always tried to keep the bass up higher. Maybe Jake's doing something similar? Those amps don't like the bass up higher. Some guys even put the bass on zero.

I think the Cry of Love CD "Brother" is one of my all time favorites. Audley's playing and tone on that CD floor me everytime I throw it in the player. I've gone through periods of listening to that CD for weeks every year since 1994. I absolutely love it. His playing kills!

I saw them in '89/90 in Boston and it was an awesome show. The volume really overcame any issues I had with the tone per se. Unfortunately it didn't help me in regards to my suckage...

I should be picking up my '78 2203 from Soldano pretty soon after some modding so I'll have to post some clips and see if I can redeem myself

I only had the "Brother" CD (never bought the other one or two?), but my gosh, that CD freaking rocks. I'm serious when I say I've gone through a phase of listening to it regularly every single year since 1994. Audley's playing and tone are second to none on that CD.

Did you ever see them live? I didn't, don't know if they made it up here or not, actually. But I remember he was a gear freak, always had cool amps at the time, Marshalls, Fender Tonemaster, Bogner XTC, etc.
