Jake by light years. i quit listening to Ozzy when Zakk joined. To me he's a poser, not interesting to listen to, and I think his vibrato blows cak. Exaggerated rubber band bends

Jake is my favorite Ozzy player by far...and one of my all time favorites. I love Zakk, but he can't hold Jake's jock. He even copped his squeal and didn't get that right. Jake's lead playing was only over shadowed by how insanely good his rhythm work was...and that says a lot since his lead work is better than pretty much everyone's. It really is a shame what happened to him.

Yeah, I agree with this ^^ His rythmn work was always inspiring as was the lead work

Wish Jake were louder here...

Much better...

And I always loved this track...

I really like both guitarists. For me, Zakk's best playing was the period between No Rest and No More Tears. He sounded inspired during this time. Overall, I would pick Jake. I have always loved his playing and felt he got a raw deal from the Ozzy camp. I won't get into that. Jake is an amazing rhythm and lead player with attitude as well. This might sound fruity but he is in my top 2 favorites to watch play as well (Steve Vai is the other one). He is a killer showman and just plays with such confidence and attitude. His Badlands releases are easily some of my favorite guitar oriented albums in my collection.

Love them both but lean towards Zakk. The guy just had gobs of piss and vinegar that I tend to gravitate towards but I would never claim one was better than the other. Jakes tone didnt really do it for me but I dug it on the Ultimate Sin Live...

Zakk has been on autopilot for years but make no mistake, that guy is (was) a beast of a player who could unleash the fury or play some really great, sensitive stuff. His Vibrato is awesome, It fits the songs and his style to a T.

Zakk. His early work with Ozzy was phenomenal. I don't care what he's done since. Those first couple of albums had some killer riffs and leads on them. KILLER. And they weren't as METAL sounding as Jake's riffs. Overall, the songwriting was better than during the Bark/Jake period, so it appealed to a much broader audience of listeners. He also really mainstreamed chicken pickin' in rock/metal. Cool stuff!

Also, Jake had BAD tone. Zakk had GREAT tone.

P.S. I don't care what YOU say. I am right.

Love both guys. Grew up listening to both. I just joined an Ozzy tribute and have been learning both guys stuff. Gotta say Jake's stuff is oddball. Zakk is much more straightforward pentatonic riffs with some occasional cool stretch type riffs but Jake's stuff is out there. Listen to the Ultimate Sin solo and some of the fill riffs in that and Lightning Strikes has some crazy stuff in it as well. Both guys rock. I like Zakk's tone much better though.

I don't know why but I'm not a big fan of either but I like Zakk just a little better. I didn't care for Badlands or anything Jake did after the Ultimate Sin album. At least Zakk is still keeping the guitar solo alive today but his pinch harmonics get old real quick.

I think part of the reason I'm not big on these guys is in my opinion Ozzy oversold them before we ever heard them play a note. Randy was my main guy and I remember hearing Ozzy pimping Jake as the next big thing months before the album and being disappointed a lot of Bark of the Moon. he is a great player but I can't get into him...

Considering how much discussion there's been in the Randy vs. Eddie debate, let's compare two players more closely matched than Randy and Eddie. IMHO it's pointless to compare those two anyway. Their styles/music is completely different.
Where in that thread was anybody asked to compare them? I made that point in the thread and I'll make it again here since you apparently don't read well for comprehension...the thread simply asked who you preferred and why...comparison was never mentioned.

Even though Jake and Zakk's styles are different too, they at least both played with Ozzy, so it's a better comparison.
Says you. Its all in how you want to look at it. First off, I feel Jake's and Zakk's styles are every bit as different as Eddie and Randy. Secondly, Jake is almost 10 years older than Zakk and cut his teeth on the west coast whereas Zakk paid his dues in NJ...conversely Randy and Eddie were the same age and essentially competed against each other on the same scene at the same time.

How is one comparison "better" than the other? I'll help you out...it isn't.

BTW, gotta go with Jake on this one although they're both great players and cool guys to hang out with.

Whenever there is vs people are going to compare. Tigers vs White Sox...compare records, pitching staffs and hitters of both teams. Same in boxing or MMA, you compare the fighters. If you don't want any comparisons perhaps leaving off the vs in the thread title would help ;)

I really like both of their tones. Especially their live tones. The recorded produced tones was not really in their hands. otherwise they were basically Marshall guys (Zakk played a lot of modded Marshalls, ) and BOSS pedals dudes (after Zakk dropped his rack.) You can hear how raw Jake's tone was when he wasn't being overproduced on Ozzy's albums. I love that. Rumblin' Train was him on a Les Paul.

Just judging off the Ozzy Discs, my vote is for Jake E Lee. Never was much of a fan of NRFTW and to me Zakk's only good Ozzy Album is No More Tears, therefore I give the nod to Jake. He was also a more interesting player, IMO.

Never heard of Bandlands, but checking them out on grooveshark now. I will have to pick up the disc. :)

Zakk has not put out anything that touches Badlands 1/2, or Ultimate Sin. Plus he uses a chorus pedal ...

:D

The first Badlands album just freakin rules. Jake's tone is just killer on it.

the SOLO to bark at the moon! that wraps this thread up! who wrote it..... Jake..... thats the metal solo of ''all time''

Love em both but Zakk by a nose hair. Was a huge Jake fan and didn't really like No Rest For The Wicked (still think it's boring) but No More Tears blew me away. That era of Zakk up to Ozzmosis is killer. I also think the Live At Budokan dvd is insane.

I'm having a hard time deciding this. Both have been a big influence and inspiration to me.

Just when I thought I had decided on Jake (after watching the BATM tour clips great great tone and playing  ) my 2 year old put "Just Say Ozzy" on the cd player and man Zakk's tone and playing are great! He's on fire!

But maybe it's still Jake, and only because I like his work after Ozzy, mainly Badlands, more than Zakk after he tuned down... might be different again tomorrow   .
