I mean, cities never have enough money, and the budget he's working with was inherited from the last guy. So whoever became mayor would have had to either make major cuts or raise revenue somehow.

Simply said that Mamdani isn't begging any billionaires for anything...
The problem is democrats always dream up new spending to try to buy votes then when they don’t have enough money they threaten to cut “ essential services”. Sam Page is pulling that shit right now in STL. Trotting out the old city/county “ better together” bullshit again.

Except to lobby hochul to increase taxes because he doesn’t have enough money. Surely you don’t think Momdani has a better grip on the state’s budget than the governor ?

Hochul's end game with Mamdani is to keep him close but not that close. If he wants to go on a spending spree then NYC needs to find the money itself. It's not coming (all) from the state.

She can't afford to alienate him because she is an upstate governor (Buffalo) that is not that popular in NYC. She needs his endorsement this November. If you want to win a NY gubernatorial race, you need to carry NYC.

New york voting system sucks.
5 boros, buffalo, Rochester and albany counties control it.

Lee Zeldin won all the counties except these 8 and lost the state.

Out of 62 counties and he won 54 and lost to the wicked witch of the North

Go figure.

So he lost the places where people actually live? Lol

It's pretty crazy when you look at the election outcome on a map and it's all red except for a few blue dots. Geographically most of the state is closer to rural Pennsylvania or rural Ohio and that's how they vote, except for the blue dots you mention.

Cuomo overperformed in NYC and underperformed upstate (they hated him). Upstate folks used to call him the "Mayor of New York State"

The blue areas are where all the people live. Land doesn't vote.

Absolutely, population density. But New York has an interesting upstate/downstate dynamic. There is a lot of sentiment among upstate folks that would just like to chop off NYC and let it be its own state. They want nothing to do with it and would be happy if it floated away out to sea never to be seen again. At same time, they would lose their entire revenue base. The money that funds their hospitals, law enforcement coverage, roads, bridges, rural programs etc. exists because of the downstate (the metro area) economy. Chop off NYC and upstate looks more like Nebraska

Disagree, NY State without NYC would be fiscally much better off.
Upstate would survive but they wouldn't be able to continue current spending levels. The New York State economy is directly tied to Wall Street performance. More than half the state's population lives in either NYC or Long Island, and the higher earners and billionaire whales all live in that metro area. The outflow of money from the City to upstate is greater than the inflow of upstate money to the City. It's not zero sum.

It certainly doesn't help with Hochul chasing away people and companies and then begging them to come back and be fleeced. That woman is clearly deranged.

Several large generational companies have already left NY state unfortunately.

Good luck New York State.

NYC MAYOR MAMDANI BRAGS ABOUT HOCHUL BAILOUT WHILE PILING CASH ON ILLEGALS AND TAXING THE RICH INTO FLIGHT

Socialist NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani just admitted he didn’t balance the budget — he got bailed out by Governor Kathy Hochul with hundreds of millions in state taxpayer dollars diverted from the rest of New York.

Mamdani thanked Hochul and Albany Democrats for $352 million in direct aid, $3.2 billion in state authorizations including pension restructuring, and claimed another $500 million in “new revenue” from taxing the rich.

This isn’t leadership. It’s robbery. Upstate and suburban New Yorkers are now forced to subsidize Mamdani’s failing city while he blows an estimated $1.5 billion on benefits for illegal immigrants. Rich New Yorkers with second homes are already selling and fleeing to Florida and Texas — exactly as predicted.
Mamdani didn’t close any gap. He stole from working and middle-class New Yorkers outside the city to fund his socialist giveaway machine inside it.

Hochul’s bailout just accelerates the collapse: higher taxes, more flight, bigger deficits, and endless demands for more handouts.
This is the Democrat blueprint — punish success, reward illegals, and make everyone else pay the price.

New Yorkers outside the five boroughs are getting screwed, and the whole state is next if voters don’t rip this disaster out by the roots.

Zohran Mamdani just erased a $12 BILLION deficit with zero service cuts and zero new taxes on regular New Yorkers. Republicans said it was impossible. They lied.

Remember six months ago when every Republican pundit, every Fox News host, and every billionaire-funded think tank was screaming that Zohran Mamdani would destroy New York City? That his "democratic socialist" agenda was economic suicide? That the math didn't work?

The math worked.

Mamdani just announced he completely wiped out the $12 billion budget deficit that the wildly corrupt Eric Adams left behind. No public service cuts. No new taxes on working New Yorkers. None of the austerity nightmare Republicans promised was the only option.

Here's how he actually did it. He secured $8 billion in new state assistance. He passed a pied-à-terre tax on second homes valued over $5 million, which means billionaires who use Manhattan apartments as glorified parking spots for their money are finally paying their fair share. The ultra-wealthy are losing their minds about it. Everyone else is cheering.

Then he found nearly $2 billion in savings by doing the most boring thing imaginable: actually running the government competently. Reducing overtime. Renegotiating contracts. Updating ancient software. Consolidating leases. Phasing out programs nobody was using. Collecting revenue the city was already owed.

The kind of basic management that every Republican claims to support and never actually does.

And after all that, he still had enough left over to put $2 billion back into the rainy day fund and $5.2 billion into the Retiree Health Benefit Trust.

So let's review. The "fiscally responsible" Republicans gave Eric Adams a fawning thumbs-up while he ballooned the deficit to its highest level since the Great Recession. The "socialist who would destroy the economy" walked in, taxed the right people, ran the government like an adult, and turned the whole thing around in months.

Every single talking point about democratic socialism being unworkable just got demolished by reality. Every single claim that Republicans are the party of fiscal discipline just got buried under their own record. And every billionaire who threatened to flee the city if Mamdani won is now stuck watching the city thrive while they pay a tax they can easily afford.

Tax the rich. Run the government competently. Watch the deficit disappear.
It really was that simple the whole time. They just didn't want you to know.

Lol. Cope harder.

“Many said the only way out of this was slashing services and passing an austerity budget. We rejected that,” Mamdani said in a video accompanying the announcement. “Our city is now on firm financial ground.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a city budget on Tuesday that completely eliminates what he has described as a $12 billion deficit left over from the Eric Adams administration, the largest gap since the Great Recession. The budget does not include the property tax increases Mamdani threatened earlier in the year or any new taxes on ordinary New Yorkers, and the mayor’s office says there are no cuts to city services for those in need.
