"It’s not clear how common hermaphrodite dogs are, but the shelter’s executive director, Kristina Rinaldi, said last month that she had never seen a hermaphrodite dog before.

Nessel got in touch with Rinaldi after reading media reports. Nessel happened to be looking for a dog to join her family in Plymouth, Mich., where she lives with her wife, twin 12-year-old children and two cats.

She paid a visit to the Detroit rescue facility and said she was immediately won over by the dog’s friendly disposition.

“We really wanted to go with somebody that understood him,” Rinaldi said of Cody. “And it was just amazing with Dana’s background and her fighting so hard for gay, lesbian, transgender rights, that this was just the perfect fit.”

Cody’s identity as a hermaphrodite was part of what interested Nessel in the dog in the first place. The family is planning to change the dog's name from "Cody" to something more gender-neutral, but it hasn't agreed on a new name yet.

Nessel says she's pushing to rename Cody after the David Bowie gender-bending alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.



Packs of wild dogs and feral cats roaming is normal for me. Any reserve has them. Don't get bit.

Reserve sounds too much like a place you keep endangered animals. Or a shit ton of oil. I’d be offended. My relatives on my grandmother’s side in Muskogee and Talequah call it “ The Nations”. Never met the ones on my great grandfather’s side, but from what I see they just call it “ The Rez”.

I never knew Robbie Robertson was in a movie with Gary Busey and Jodie Foster. Those rides are still running just fine travelling across Canada. The Zipper is really good at getting money out of peoples pockets.
