DEMO: Motor City Hot Head vs BKP VHII into Peters GNL amp...

Demo'd with some riffs from a new song I'm currently working on.
1 Guitar Track Left & 1 Guitar Track Right.
Drums are Toontrack EZDrummer 2.
No bass.

Next time...
I'll do the Motor City Detroiter vs BKP Black Dog.

First off that thread where people are asking for amps that have "growl" should be referred to this thread.lol

For 2 tracks its sounds huge.

What were your settings ,Gain Pres .crunch and edge for this??

Just great tone IMO full warm and punchy not too aggressive

BTW is that a V30 IR or real cab

It's been quite a while, so forgive me for not remembering you.
I assume you have a Peters amp? If so, which one you got?

I'll take a pic of my amp settings for you later.
And yeah I went direct with my trusty old V30 Impulse File for the recording.
But in my 2x12 I have British made V30s and they sound pretty much the same as this clip.

Awesome tone! It sounded like the Motor City pickups had a clearer top end..to me anyway. The BKs sounded a little beefier too, but once you add the bass to the track, Id opt for the clearer top end.
 
Awesome! The bareknuckle VHII is the best pickup I have ever played but I have wanted to try a motor city detroiter, looking forward to the next demo
 
I love the VHII. It's so versatile and clear it's addictive.
 
The MCP sounded a little hotter but just ever so slightly not a thick sounding. The VHII seemed to have the upper hand in note separation and overall fatness. Something else I noticed is that the MCP made the amp sound more like a hot rodded Marshall. Hard to explain but it just has this extra push to it that the VHII doesn't have. But I would pick the VHII based on this comparison. Good stuff man! Thanks for taking the time to go through it :rock:

sounds good . The motor city sounds like it has more mid .

Just my $.02 . I would like to hear some upper octave stuff to compare the top end of the pups .

I agree with all these observations.

To my ears...

Bare Knuckle VHII has an almost single-coil like, stringy attack to it. Makes the VHII sound slightly more percussive than the HotHead.
It has a lot of grind in the lows and highs, and this makes it sound as thick overall as the HotHead.
But it is clear and laid-back in the mids.
Doesn't push the amp as much as the HotHead. As a result, for me the VHII is a more demanding pickup to play since it's so clean and transparent.
But on the plus side, this contributes to its great articulation and note separation.
Also, I found the VHII a picky pickup in different guitars.

Motor City HotHead has clear, tight lows. But still manages to sound thick.
And it has a slight attenuation in the highs without sounding too chopped. Very nice thick but cutting highs.
The grind in the low-mids is wicked. The mids overall have more interesting character for my tastes.
It has a fuller "thwack" sound when palm muting than the VHII.
Feels like a much hotter pickup when you play it, and as a result it's more user-friendly.
But of course, this means the HotHead has a little less clarity and note separation than the VHII.

I have to admit, I didn't like the VHII at first. But it has grown on me especially after finding the right guitar for it.
The HotHead on the other hand was an instant hit.

Both great pickups, but for my tastes the Motor City HotHead is my favorite.

Cool. Really dig both pups but I would have to settle on the VHII. Looking forward to the next comparison.
 
Zero difference, both sounded exactly the same.

Listen without watching the video and no one could ever tell.

Amp sounds amazing ,I don't currently have a Peters but have been speaking with James and it was the GNL and Fsm I have been kinda back and forth on

Your Old Gryphon clips like Blackwater Park and the Modern hi gain through the 212s with the GH30 and V30 mix have always blown me away, and I don't play quite as heavy

I am more Shinedown stuff, But your tone and your originals too have always been incredible to listen to .

That said I think I may like the GNL even a bit more here than your other clips a bit more bite while still keeping that growl you had

The GNL seems to have the Chunk of a well dialled Recto crossed with a Hot Rod Marshall ,unique sounds

very similar! But the Hot Head sounds like it has 1 or 2db uppermid boost in just the right freq.
 
I like the Hothead a bit more to for the lil extra upper mid bite that cuts in a mix
