O.k.....so I'm pretty much the last guy who would ever consider getting racks of effects and stuff like that. My total effects collection consists of an OCD and a Digitech PDS2000 delay pedal that doesn't work   A died in the wool, tried and true, tube amp freak. I've watched the whole AxeFx drama unfold from the sidelines and paid very little real attention to the whole thing...sort of "meh, whatever..." Tonight changed that...

Yakima Jason came by and brought his AxeFx Standard unit by for a demo. It exceeded my expectations and erased any preconceived notions I had. We went through a three hour run on his AxeFx and I'm basically blown away...seriously. First we ran it through my Aiken Intruder and he showed me the various methods of hooking it up and I was pretty impressed with what I was hearing. Great tones, killer crunch sounds. It really helped that he knows his way around this unit and was able to quickly get me everthing I was asking for tonewise. He has a bunch of great patches he created and saved.

Then we ran it through my Bogner Ecstasy Classic using the power amp, switched over to the amp itself and I played through the blue and red channel, then back to the AxeFx. After about 30 seconds of tweaking on a Bogner patch he had previously created, bigger than shit it sounded near identical to my Ecstasy...I don't mean close - but close your eyes and you would have a hard time figuring out which was which - that is until he added some effects and it got super huge. Just freaking awesome

Then we went through another 50 + amps. Unreal. The tones were spectacular. I mean, there isn't a single tone that thing cant reproduce. Now, while the feel to the whole thing was really really good - when we switched over to the actual amp itself there was that certain something that stood out and made you know THAT is a 100 watt tube amp kids. But it was not near enough of a difference for me to question the validity of this unit. The cleans patches were stellar, the ability to run more than one amp at once was awesome :clean Deluxe Reverb along with a VHTD60 set for a little bit of dirt and backed off in the mix - Stoopid Cool tone

Will this replace tube amps in my house or in general, probably never, but I could very easily see selling my Bogner tomorrow and buying one of these to run through my Aiken or a power amp. This truly makes the need to own a dozen amps a thing of the past. This unit is just a shitload of fun to play. I'm a believer

BTW, I still love the whirlwind leader too. I've been using the same one for 15 years.

Woah...............................

the mighty Bogner sweating it out with the new kid in town.....NEVER thoght I would hear you say that. Most of the bashers and nay sayers I don't listen to as I dont consider them much of a reference for me to listen to but you??????

Last man standing is Mentoneman...............................

What...he didn't feel like bring his Classic Reverb???

:gethim:

Love mine to death and Im never getting rid of it. Sure, theres amps Id like to try but in the end, Im convinced that everything someone could want is within the AF's ability to reproduce, its up to the user to bring it out. If you cant, it isnt the AxeFx's fault IMO

Im big on convenience and the it doesnt get anymore convenient than the AF

Glad I could warp your mind a little bit. It's a great unit for sure.

Thanks for having me over Steve, lots of fun. I saved that patch that we matched with the XTC too, I love being able to AB it against the real amp, it's like stealing amp souls..lol

No Classic Reverb Paige, ...... It's at home along with the Emplexador. :D Maybe next trip........

You need to head out east on your next trip   .

Give me a call later to talk cabs...

I think I'd finally like to try one. :scared: Maybe I'm just getting annoyed that I'm hearing the Mark V's won't be out until JUNE! :(

So, how does this thing sound with a Boogie poweramp, like the 50/50 or 290?

Sounds awesome with the 290 that I heard as wellas the VHT 2502. sounds great with my carvin for crying out loud!!

I've still yet to feel any GAS pains for one....which is shocking considering how much of a gear whore I am

killer rig

get yourself a carvin 150 power amp. they are like 300 bucks and u will have a killer wet dry wet rig

VF, I went through the same thing last week when I got to play and hear gainfreak's Axe. I had a Standard in my house for 2 weeks and hadn't even played through it yet. Now I'm rushing to finish soldering my cables to get in my rig along side my Egnater M4 in a WDW thing.

They're so good it's not funny.

Plus, they're capable of very much gain. Right Ralph? :D

I'd love a Mark V too but after hearing the Axe, I can't imagine why I'd need one. The Axe even over-shadowed my Egnater M4. The Egnater is great. I love the tones but it's only got 4!! In fact, after hearing how many drastically different tones there are in the Axe, the Egnater modules sounded very similar to each other. I have the T/D, EG5, ERect and MHG.

Sounds great through a good power amp ( I have used Carvin DCM600, VHT 2/50/2, Boogie 50/50 and the power section of several amp heads).

I am particularly partial to the power section of Mark series Mesa's. Given this, I tried out a Mesa Simul Satellite as my power amp and LOVE it. It certainly colors the sound and does limit some of what the Axe can do (ie, my tones always have the same poower section, even though I do use the power amp sims in the Axe...and I am using guitar cabinets, so I don't use any of the cab modeling).

This combination is probably not the best for someone who wants a lightweight solution for gigging, but the tones I get are superb in every sense, at any volume. I have my Axe, power conditioner and Satellite all loaded into an 8 space rack. In fact, I will have 2 identical racks as soon as I receive the rackmount kit for my second Satellite. :D

I still have moments where I think I should experiment with FRFR again to utulize everything the Axe can do....and may. But given my fondness for Mark series power sections, the setup I have right now is perfect for me

I just wish I could afford one and a foot controller. No way I could do that right now so I guess Marshall it is for me. :D
