Well after reading a million posts and listening to a million clips I've come to the conclusion that I have to do this myself on a bit of a bigger scale. So I have just ordered a number of popular pickups and own a number myself and basically one day next week, when everything arrives I'm hiring a tech for a day and we are going to track my Les Paul with all the pickups, so a day of ripping guitars apart. I will record everything. Mark Cameron emailed and may want to help me with this.

If anyone is in the LA area and wants to come by that is cool. My studio is on the corner of Hollywood/Caheunga, tons of guitars, amp, cabs, mics, pres etc... All the good SHIT!

If anyone wants to send a pup to be used that's cool to. Manufactures are welcome to, we will be focusing on bridge pickups for Les Pauls.

I run gearslutz.com and host some of the biggest most famous shootouts in pro audio history, so the shootout will be top shelf and your gear will be treated like gold, I will pay for shipping both ways. Let me know if you want a pup of yours in the shootout. The more the merrier, looking for Bareknuckles, ThroBak, Rio Gande, Wolfetone etc....

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-sho ... files.html

If you want to send a pup email me asap:
james@jameslugo.com

If anyone is shipping can you email me a tracking number so I have someone at the studio to sign:

Dear Mark Cameron,

Please do not waste your time on a pickup shootout, and focus on building more amps instead.

Sincerely,

I know a lot of ppl here don't like EMG's...but I think for sanity's sake...you should wire up a EMG 81, 85, 81X, and 85X in the bridge of that LP and see how she rips!

I'd like to hear how the EMG's stand up next to the Suhrs...WCR's...MCP's...and how the 81 and 81x sound compared to each other...and the 85 / 85x sound compared to each on the bridge pickups!

i agree with this. maybe add some SD blackouts just to compare the two "major" active brands.

Not a new one, just a new edition to the list, sorry that was confusing.

Very, very, very intriguing. I'm looking to maybe put new pickups in my PRS Custom 24 (medium-high gain output) - this is just what I need to help pick! Can you try to track down a set of WCR Shredders? I hear those are rare, but extremely versatile.

In all seriousness, I put the EMG 81/85 pups in my Custom 24 and it's incredible. You should try them.

Will pick ups that are sent in be returned to their owners? I have a few I might be able to send.

How far off are they with F spacing? Will it give good representation of the pickups tone and output? If so, hell yeah bring it!

It should be pretty close - I'll bring it and we can use it if you don't have a regular spaced one on hand.

Hey James, I can bring one - but it is f-spaced. Let me know if you want to check it out.

I have a regular one I am selling, no one has bit yet, so I can send it if you want.

That would be awesome, a few people have emailed me wanting to see if we can get a BBQ in the mix. I think this is gonna be killer, it'll be a great resource for people to get an idea of how these pickups sound in the same guitar, through the same amp, on the same songs on the same day. No BS! It's gonna be killer.

Also just got a:
Motor City - Solutions
ThroBak SLE-101 Plus ltd

That would be great. If we were shooting out mics, mic pres, compressor, eq's etc... I know everyone in that world but the boutique guitar thing is kind of new for me so I don't know all the manufacturers.

you definitely need to get some Anderson's there as well. H2+, H3, H3+ or HN3

No doubt! If I had to pick one, it would be the H2+. You may get Tom to send one himself (or show up) if you ask him on the Anderson forum (he's there a lot).

I could pull one out of a mutt if you can't get one otherwise...let me know.

do yourself a favor and install some form of quick connectors on the guitars and the pickups. it will make swapping them much faster and easier. fewer burned up pots, too.

Are you looking for mild/vintage pups or hot rodded high output pups?

I'm tentatively looking at doing this Monday night and all day and night Tuesday May 4th and 5th. I've had a few more manufacturers contact me about sending pickups. This is gonna be crazy!

Also I need a tech for the day. If anyone knows anyone in LA that would want to work this with me I will pay them. Basically installing pickups and tuning guitars. ???

Also I need to know the system I need to get so I don't have to soldier every pickup to the pots. Someone had mentioned a clipping system. ???

I will use a multi mic system on every track; 57/421 - API 312/Neve 1073
The tracks will be crystal clear. I'm thinking a verse and chorus of 2 songs and a 1 minute solo guitar playing some rhythm and lead. One of the songs is a funkier rock tune, the other is drop tuned heavy chunking. It should give everyone a good scope of each pickup. Not sure on the amps yet, possibly my 71' Super Tremolo (Friedman 'Brown Eye') for the funkier tune and either my Herbert or my 77' JMP (Friedman BE, Custom 45, HBE) in Hairy Brown Eye mode for the heavy tune. Maybe a multi amp with my 2 channel Recto rack. Not sure yet. No matter what is used it's gonna be mind-blowing for anyone looking at buying a pickup. I will upload hi res mp3's and also have full band width protools files.

Cabs will be a straight Uberkab and straight Orange (V30's).

Shootout date:

Monday May 4th 7pm till...
Tuesday May 5th 11am till...

If you are shipping pups get them out asap so they are here in time and email me tracking numbers. This is gonna rock. WB and Walker Pickups just contacted and are sending a slew of pickups. I just started organizing what I have laying around the studio that aren't in guitars:

Gibson BurstBucker Pro - Gibson 57 Classic - Duncon Custom - Duncan Custom5
