You know I have insulted this guy over and over again, and now he finally has abandoned me...
Because Trace is well known for abandoning the small people to run off to amp tech for extravagant players, sometimes for over a year, and still charges inane prices. For example he’s tried to charge $220/hr for non-technical questions to customers. If that doesn’t spell asshole out, I don’t know what does. I used to like Trace but no more. How do you know this? Do you have a source? That is basically my source. Obviously, you don't like the guy or have issues with him. Yet AC/DC didn't. So what gives?
I fucking Love this guy. I wish you would change your avatar to a fire engine. @VESmedic @DanTravis62 It's fucking christmas come early
". On a track, you will rarely tell the difference in a mix except where absolutely necessary for a 100W to cover whatever frequencies you want that aren't in the 50W." Well it appears we have some frequencies that are in the bigger amps that don't make it to lower amps, afterall...Hmm. Hope this edit made it's way into the book.
"The guitar is a mid-range instrument." This right here is priceless information. All of us that are midscooping....tut tut. That's why we are all lost in the mix. I am curious, though. Everyone ('Wise experienced Non metal guys') talks about getting lost in a mix midscooping. But can you scoop the mids enough on a Marshall or Wizard to ever get lost in the mix? lmao
"100W amps are already 99W too loud for any small room so if you want PT distortion then you are obviously in for an attenuator, power staging or an isolation cab." I know it is complicated to understand, but we consistently try to explain to you that we are not cranking on 10. We play metal. We don't play mush..Why don't you find a forum of rock players, not metal players? Maybe then you would fit in a bit better, and not look like such a dumb bitch. Jesus. You are as Thick headed as a Mule and as Dumb as one, too
Well, fucking link us! Don't leave us hanging...You all really need to go to thetonedicks website. I’m pretty sure a child made it. He also has excerpts from his book and by god is it god damn amazing. I’d LOVE to read the chapters on mic placement and DI’s, I’m sure there is a toilet bowl of garbage information there that is sure to make other newb guitarists think this guy has a clue about anything. Lord help us.
Alright... here is a comparison between a 50 watt Friedman Smallbox and a 100 watt JEL100, both on Friedmans plexi channel.
Which amp sounds bigger and punches more?
I'm not talking about sounding good...the smallbox sounds awesome and every bit as good as the JEL. I know this is a YT vid but to me it quite obvious even though I'm not in the room to feel the dynamics between the two amp. I thought this might fit into the discussion...
These are good. Yes, the 100 has some differences from a 50W and the 50W from 30W and so on. As it stands though any of those amps can compete with the loudest drummer out there. What they won't compete with is another higher wattage amp on higher volume, except maybe if the frequency ranges got divided up like dual guitarists.
However, and here comes the rub. That's a shootout. If you did a blind test, other things start happening when people can't see the amps. In a mix, then it becomes a choir identifying the model let alone wattage. That's just the way it is. Unless someone is claiming they have the gift of being able to do that, then for me and I think most people, it's often random guesswork when we look at the final stats on who guessed what.
I certainly don't have those abilities. I can determine the model and maybe that's about it.
Can we please not wreck every thread on RigTalk?

Also what I think sounds really good is the Wampler Tumnus OD he is boosting both amps with it's making me want to check out a Tumnus now and I have already been down the Klon road once..... dammit...Man, that small box sounds really good. Really good. Everyone says Friedman is really smooth, but that amp sounded Right.
Not 100% true.... Michael Schenker played exclusively 50 watt Marshalls(some of my favorite tones) as well as many more I'm sure but I do agree tons of my favorite players used the 100 watters in the 60's and 70's for sheer volume, alot of the guitars didn't get mic'd alot of times at some venues. Also, I can’t think of a single record I love in the heavy genre over the last 30-40 years that the main rhythm tones were anything less than 100 watts. Gee… I wonder why that is? But, I guess since thetonedick wrote a book on it, and says that studios are all using -23 watt amps, I guess I’ll believe it!
