I think he started using the 5150 amp while on tour with VH, after the Exposed album was recorded
I heard it was on slbum . And track as soon as track one hits I hear 5150 immediately and the tone was thrash af for him. I got it from a. Interview. He could lied to endorse it but man I just hear 5150 and Steve’s tone changed to uktra modern fast

I’m just remembering from a magazine article from a gazillion years ago. I don’t remember a mention of the 5150.

A post on HC apparently from the tech Michael Kaye on the Youthanasia era.

"The final sounds were at the direction of Max Norman and the discretion of Dave and Max.

We used the stage rigs ( although we had problems with the 2150's and we used Marshall and Mesa power amps for Dave.

(All FIVE 2150's were used in rotation to try to keep Marty's rig running on the road).

The CAE3+ preamps were great- tube selection was crucial for voicing- I just sold mine last year

Also used for guitar amps were a Soldano SLO-100 ( which I bought from Marty and still have) , Marshall Plexi RI, '86 JCM800 ( which I have), Peavey 5150 and even Ampeg SVT

We had the ability through the use of teh Bradshaw rigs to run signal to multiple amps- usually 3 at a time in iso rooms, and the faders would be used to get the desired sounds

Cabs were Marshall w Greenback 25's g1275T and Vintage 30's...majority use were Crate 412's with Celestion 50's these recorded great.

Direct signal, Ampeg SVT and Peavey 5150 amps were used- the 5150 for some "grind"

My real answer is a local band. Both rigs have always been a Tubescreamer into an OG 5150

God Forbid - Constitution of Treason

I still remember Doc trying to sell that 5150 in the classifieds on here.
That does sound great!

From around that time, I also really like All that Remains - This Darkened Heart

I picked up a block letter a few weeks ago to relive some of those old tones again. Plugged in and played along with a few In Flames albums, I couldn't tell where my tone ended and the albums began. It's not modern, refined or very "tight" by today's amp standards but damn it sounds so good. All those In Flames albums were absolutely incredible

For me the quintessential 5150 tone was Arch Enemy's Stigmata album. Alongside In Flames, I think of Arch Enemy using the 5150. Arch Enemy I think had a bit better guitar tone though.

Honorable mentions:

Opeth's album "My Arms, Your Hearse" used a 78' Gibson SG & 74' Gibson LPC thru a 5150 with the Peavey cab.

Opeth's album "Still Life" had the same guitars and a 5150, recorded at Studio Fredman.

Most of The Haunted's Revolver was recorded at Studio Fredman using their personal 5150s. They had a DVD for Revolver with a close up of their settings, wish I could find it online

Job For A Cowboy used 5150's on their early stuff, which is just a disgusting display of riffage

Job sees so cool at first . Nasty and original. They they got better at their instruments and they became normal to me

I think their last album Sun Eater is absolute insanity. They dropped such a massive album and then dropped off the face of the planet. No support, no tour just walked away.

Pretty odd .

I actually like reroute to remain tone better . But of course clay rules
really? i remember when that came out, and i was like "whats wrong with the production?". That was the first album they did by themselves in a converted studio. The album is great, but the production is a serious downgrade IMO. Clayman is a benchmark. Colony is right up there as well.

some of those early opeth albums sound like a stock 5150 recorded at bedroom volume. for better or worse.
still life is probably my favorite opeth era.

Never knew Opeth used 5150s.

The Haunted makes sense though. Revolver is one of my favorites.

I love it . It’s got something unique I love

I overall like the mix on Revolver. I love the music. I'm just not sure I love the guitar tone in particular, though. A bit too bright for my taste.

Was there a period Steve Morse was using 5150’s? For some reason that’s popping in my head.

Balance would have to be it for me as every other album I love with 5150s were also blended with other amps. The End Of Heartache, in particular.

I saw his solo band and the Dixie Dregs in San Francisco 2001 and Steve was using a 5150
