Nice! BTW it is possible to gig without 3 am load outs. My band does all kinds of spring through fall outdoor shows -parks winery country clubs where we are loading out from 8-10 pm :m17:
Yep, I did fill in on Bass for a drummer I know 2 yrs back...it was a benefit show/auction. 10-midnight. I was still tired the next day :ROFLMAO:

instead of 40 new boutique amps every year someone needs to make an attenuator that doesn’t suck all the tone out for home playing

BUT,.... how long can you sustain that kind of jet propulsion volume?? My 2203 gets cranked to about 3 and it's punch you in the chest beyond band volume loud -thats with the Mr scary mod giving it a killer added gain stage. Which also allows the amp to be used and MV on 2 which is stays thick and a more manageable loud band volume. without eh Scary V2 mod it gets thin there. Also with it the Lo input is a fat killer clean to slight break up tone!

MV on 3 and you turning the cab away. I live on 2 acres and can crank it all hours and do!
Back to the original question, did you ever use the SL in a band rehearsal or live context or was it a 'wow that really punch but my ears are damaged and I'm not gonna do that again anytime soon scenario'?
I can take Marshall’s 100w past 3 for like 40-50min max now before my ears are shot

I think the best attenuator I ever used was putting on a set of headphones. Just plain cheap headphones block out enough so it’s not tearing your head off but the pants still flap. But it’s an attenuator for one.

The problem with attenuators is, they take out a huge part of the plexi experience....the speaker compression at high vol. That's why the tone is not so good....without the speakers being pushed, we don't get that important part of the equation.

That does not take care of the singer staring daggers at best and telling you to turn down at worst.
All attenuators suck period. I'll use my Fractal before an attenuator.

Yup --You must be old to understand this !! LOL!

Curious about mic ing. When it says 'Zen' not sure if its Leon or? I know he is part of the group and does a lot of great videos. One thing I notice wanted to ask him is why use just a single 57 when mic ing? That generally sounds thin the IR he graciously provides is clear sounding but really. Just curious as to the rationale of using a single 57 when most would pair with a ribbon or other condenser?

Lastly, because I just got a 79 JMP 2203 -from your and Dave Friedman's recommendation. Wondering how the Super lead compares to the JMP at band volume?
Leon is part of the family but no doesn't post from this account - my name is Anton and I'll be your tone obsessed host today. G'day all.

A single 57 is a simple and effective way to record a cab, and is really the default standard. Anyone familiar with recording or sound reinforcement knows what to expect, so I think for gear demos it makes good sense. In isolation - which we're all so used to now because of the internet - yeah a lone 57 can sound a little thin and harsh. Once the band kicks in, you're good.

Super Lead vs 2203. Both awesome options, obviously. Hard to put tone into words but overall I agree with some of the other comments from the guys.

There's a certain addictive midrange that comes from absolutely pounding the amp's output stage. Cranking the master to 10 on a 2203 and dialling back the preamp gain works great, but that's not how they're typically run. Preamp gain up high on a 2203 with the master dialled back and the tone diverges more from a SL.

All attenuators suck period. I'll use my Fractal before an attenuator.
Have you tried a Power Station? It's superb for pushing the hell out of a 2203's power amp, or at least getting the master past noon. The Deep control and FX loop is pretty handy too.

Zen, I'm gonna need you to do me a favor. Im gonna need you to let me come down there and play really loud on a few of those amps, and then me, you, and Leon can go grab a few beers and talk shop ?
Sounds like a plan, but beer first I say.

Effin rock n effin roll

I could hear that all day
Yeah it's a rock n' roll machine for sure! Not that you can tell from this clip, but it cleans up great with the guitar volume and that's with everything (but bass) near max.

Love the way older Marshalls clean up, almost chimey, some of my fav clean sounds.
