For classification its male, female and other.
The term that had been used for "other" was hermaphrodite. For humans, it was used to classify anyone who had sexual organs of both male and female. It could be any combination, both internal and external in any proportion. Basically a catchall classification for anyone who didn't fit into male or female. It didn't take into account hormonal levels. As in if a male had higher than average estrogen levels it didn't put them in the hermaphrodite category. It only took into account the sexual organs.
Recently the term intersex has been used to replace hermaphrodite for humans, mainly for social reasons. Personally I disagree with this change because it deviates from the original definition and use of intersex that has been used for many decades
The term intersex was originally used as a descriptor for species as a whole that contained both sets of sexual organs or could naturally switch genders. Some species of frogs do this. Green frogs: Rana clamitans is probably the most well known.
Hermaphrodite is still used to describe an individual of a species (other than humans) that has both male and female reproductive organs generally due to a mutation. Using frog as an example again. When the use of pesticides such as DDT were more prevalent it caused mutations in individuals of several frog species where they were born with both male and female reproductive organs.
For now the only thing that has changed about the "other" classification is the term being used; intersex instead of hermaphrodite for humans. It's still a catchall classification that categorizes anyone that doesn't fit male or female and has sex organs of both.
The updates in science is being able to identify the genes or conditions that causes a person to be intersex. Even though some causes are identified, the end result of having both male and female sex organs is the same. So there's no need; or rather not enough evidence to further breakdown intersex into sub-classifications. Its not going to say you have a vagina one ball and a nub so you're intersex-1 and you have a partial vagina and full on cock & balls so you're intersex-2. It's just all intersex. Anything that breaks it down further is for social reasons rather than scientific purposes.
As far as Differences in Sex Development (DSD) are concerned; intersex is a form of DSD and some people improperly use the terms interchangeably. But DSD encompasses much more than intersex. One example is if a female starts having periods late; after age 16 or 17 or if a male starts puberty early, like age 7-8. Recently it began to encompass gender dysphoria. Difference in Sex Development is sort of a self descriptive term as it descries anything that is out of the ordinary in a person's sexual development. It's not limited to a person having traits or sex organs of male and female.
On the subject of mutant; scientifically it is correct terminology to call any organism with any mutation a mutant; this also includes humans/people. Socially it's considered derogatory to call a person a mutant. So no scientist would call someone a mutant, they'd refer to the mutation itself. For example, sickle cell anemia is a mutation of the blood cells so it would be referred to as a mutant blood cell, not a mutant person. On the other hand other organisms (animals, fungi, bacteria, etc.) could be referred to as a mutant. An example of this is the peppered moth. White with black spots is the original form and solid black is the mutation. So the black one could be referred to as the mutant variant. Another one is antibiotic resistant bacteria. It's mostly referred to as super-bacteria, but can also be referred to as mutant bacteria.

Thanks for that overview. Regarding classifications, it is helpful to understand the proper terminology. I'm also interested in a slightly different question — how are determinations of biological sex made? What are the essential criteria for being male or female? Are these criteria in contention? The article, for all it's limitations, seemed to justify the argument that even a chromosomal test isn't really sufficient, and minor deviations of genetic sex traits might be more common than realized. Are any abnormalities, whether chromosomal, genotypic or phenotypic automatically grounds for the intersex designation or just major and obvious ones?

I quit gigging out that direction because we hit two deer in the span of a few months coming back on 1888. About the time the bluesmobile was repaired from the first impact we hit the second one a couple weeks later. Beautiful drive on the way out in the daylight, absolutely treacherous at night.
