For you conspiracy fans: The Grunge Conspiracy

Agree here, Hair ran its course, then Grunge ran its course, then the next, etc...

I remember reading a Guitar For the Practicing Musician interview with Ronnie Le Tekro from TNT back in around 1988 or 89 where they asked him what was the future of guitar. He said something to the effect of it's going to kill itself, over saturation of similar bands, shredding may have no where to go but to simplify.
I always remembered that, kind of prophetic.

Bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Pantera didn't need to wear makeup to sell albums.
Apparently you forgot what Pantera was before Phil joined the group.

Am I the only one who refuses to call Alice in Chains grunge?
I was watching the video for Man in the Box on Headbangers Ball before the term "grunge" was ever heard of.
This was pre bombardment of Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
Look at the bands they had opened for...
Shit, my buddy had the Louder than Love cassette before we knew of Alice in Chains.

Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, not grunge.

If you ask any of those bands they’ll tell you that just like anywhere else all those bands were different from each other. They were lumped together under the moniker “Grunge” by record execs based strictly on where they were from. There is no “ Seattle sound”.

When I think pop rock, I think Journey, Bon Jovi, REO Speed Wagon, Billy Squire. I am not sure STP fits that profile.

By the 90s? Yes, they were pop rock. Just like Creed, The Calling, Nickelback, Staind, Seether, Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, etc etc etc etc

They were the first (and probably best) "post" grunge band, as they weren't from the seattle scene and had a much more cock rock instrumental influence.

Your definition of pop rock is literally only bands that came up in the late 70s and 80s. STP and their followers were the pop rock of the 90s, whether it sounds different to you or not.

Never liked AIC.

At the first Clash of the Titans tour (Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax with Public Enemy) the opener was AIC. They were heckled and booed, I remember one of AIC, maybe the singer, was having words with the crowd up front, and he jumped into the crowd. I think their set ended after that.

It was outdoors; one of the craziest pits I was ever in;, after Pantera which was the most violent pit I've ever experienced; the ground was so dry the pit created a dust storm I couldn't even see, anything, my eyes were burning and you could smell and taste the dust in the air.

it was the Bring the Noise time, was interesting, but I wasn't really into Anthrax; always liked Slayer and Megadeth.

We all know grunge was a bullshit, catch all name created by media and the bands don’t associate with it, but it is the easiest way to describe that period and whether they like it or not, it helps seal a lot of those bands in history, that would otherwise be long forgotten.
Ironically a lot of those bands when being called metal would cry foul and say they’re more punk, another bullshit, media created, catch all name. 😂
