Much prefer James's C++ graphic EQ and Aphex parametric EQ double scooped late 80s tone. His Load tone lacked fibre:

Yeah not a fan of their 90’s tone at all. Has no sharp edge to it. Too loose. Makes every song sound like it’s skirt is being held back by a couple of sado-masochistic midgets.

Moves way . Hrs Saint anger tone was his last great time . It’s huge raw and just killer

Half of that album was tuned to drop C or C# standard, honestly cant remember. Also the drums sound like they were recorded in the local gas station bathroom. The mid late 90s tone was peak metallica for me.

I know S&M was heavily pitched and polished in a studio, but James tone on that DVD was something I chased every day as a teenager

Funny thing is, people thought Metallica was terrible then. Little did they know what would come 20 years later. I honestly think many of the Load songs are good and have aged well. Sure, there's stinkers on that album (Mama Said, Ronnie, etc.), but much better than anything on 72 Seasons.

Yeah I like the era of Load through Garage Inc, but I think of those albums as from an entirely different band. It was just a different thing. They slowed down and became a heavy rock act that made some awesome heavy rock albums.

However, everything St Anger and after though has been complete irredeemable trash, zero argument there.
