Why shouldn't i get a Marshall SL-X?

I had one for a few days years ago but I returned it cause it had a problem. I have done a little bit of digging and it seems like they might be a little problematic. Any experience?

I think they're pretty cool, especially boosted. Price seems ok if it's working well.

It's a 30 year old amp though, so don't be surprised if work is needed immediately or in the near future. If this isn't something you want to deal with, look for something well into the 2000's.

Had one in the 90's. I sold my Peavey Ultra 120 to get it back then. I regretted that one. If you're playing metal I'd pass

Be sure to get one that has el-34s.
And, get the capacitor that feeds voltage to the preamp tubes replaced with a beefier one.
That is one of the “issues” with the SLX.

They have rectifier bridge problems, too.

We might be talking 2 different amps here. The SLX I had basically was 1 channel with a boost and no reverb. You thinking of the other 900's?

The 2100 was the same layout as the SL-X. 1 "channel" - with the ability to switch from loud to louder - no reverb.

I had one modded by Brent Gutierrez. Loved it big-time. Loaned it to mailman Dan when he was ampless and he dug it too. I'd do it again if I wasn't already loaded with great Marshalls.

An issue with the SL-X no one's mentioned yet is that it's a pathway to urges some might consider to be... unnatural. You may find yourself wondering what it'd be like to dance around shirtless while playing drop-tuned riffs. Then, you may film yourself to see how you look while doing it. After, you might think to yourself that an instagram filter would the perfect tasteful addition to your aesthetic. And, before you know it, you're posting filtered videos of yourself dancing online, and are playing tough guy on internet forums. You've become ChuggNorris.

I had a 50 watt SLX and a 50 watt DSL at the same time. The SLX was a little warmer with more mids.

Remember the one I brought to Jims and you biased it, and we cranked it? It just didn't hit hard. It sounded good...but just seemed to lack a bit.

Yeah, I totally remember. Same experience with mine. It had a more vintage thing to it rather than the more modern tone from the DSL. And not a lot of punch.

I can see some liking that more, though?

If no one wants their old Marshall's then why hoard them. I would gladly buy them from you dogs.
