Splawn nitro question.

Sooo my first practice with the nitro was ok… pretty much the same reason i didnt jive with my old rev blue uber. Too much bass and too much blur to the notes. Took it home and actually used the footswitch to overdrive1, and bam! There it was. My question: is there a way to get it to default to overdrive1 without the foot-switch.? I really dig the tone now but i always use amps without channel switches and run it like a single channel. Haven't had much time on splawns; but really love the mids and the punch of the thing.
First world problems and all…(should probably just use the footswitch). 💤

You want it to stay on OD1 ? You should be able to just unplug the footswitch while it’s in that channel and it’ll stay in OD1 . I rarely use the footswitchs with my Splawns and they stay in the gear/mode of choice when unplugging the footswitch

Wow. Gonna try that! Im such a Neanderthal and use every amp like a single channel lol. Thanks!

And yeah. Trying to leave it in od1. Its still more gain than i need, and od2 is too blurry/bassy. It sounds more open and tighter in od1.

Did you try running pressnce dimed and treble to taste? That's how I used to run my Competition.
I did. Ithink i ended up pres-3:00, bass-9:00, mids12-2:00, treb-9:00, will try maxing the pres and dumping the treble as soon as i get these 6ca7’s in it and biased.

Oh yeah I loved 6CA7's in the Competition. Hope you get it sorted. I love the Splawn amps.

Owned 2 different Nitros. And older 100 watt wuth the 3 button footswitch and a newer fully loaded 50-watt version with the 4-button footswitch. Liked them both quite a bit - but found that I can get so close to Nitro territory in 3rd Gear of my QR that the Nitro seemed a bit redundant in my stable.

I found that the older 3-button footswitch version was quite a bit easier to dial in. The 'Mode' options on the Nitro were not intuitive and made it a bit of a challenge to dial in. (Mode switches between gears on the QR and I'm not entirely sure what it does to the Nitro - but disengaged / green light off on footswitch was was way better sounding than when engaged.) I totally agree that the low end is tighter and far more easily controlled in OD-1 than OD-2, which is overkill to my ear. I also rolled the Resonance all the way off and found my preferred low end at around 9:00 on the bass knob as you have described.

I have a love/hate relationship with that amp. Splawns are just too damn picky with boosts and speakers IME. WIth the wrong cab, it can get destroyed in a band mix but with the right speakers it will shine through very nice. Also I concur OD2 on that amp AND any other Marshall amp IMO chew scrotum. In stock form it just clouds up the gain structure and takes away the boldness of the mids. OD1 or GTFO

Mine is a three button nitro and doesnt have modes options. Im about to plug it in and see if i can get it to default to od1.

IF I end up bonding with this amp, i will probably end up modding it to take kt88’s. I always preferred them in my old jcm/jmp’s.
It seems to like the grind pedal and the jhs screamer 3, that both have a good low end cut to them. So far it sounds good through mesa v30’s and swamp thangs that i use normally. Practice this weekend will tell if it flies in a mix though.

It took me forever to love my Nitro. For whatever reason I didn’t give up on it. The zero treble trick is legit. That and a GupTech Quebec in the loop and it sounds amazing. I prefer it with a mix of t75’s. And v30’s. It takes just about any boost well.

So I've had it in EL34 and KT88 form. The KT88's open up the amp quite nicely and smooth out the "weird mids" thing that a lot of people describe. The EL34's are much more bitey and aggressive and seem to accentuate your pickups inherent characteristics, if that makes sense. Think of it as a supercharger for your pups. However the mids can be very overbearing so take caution. I've even tried using a para and graphic EQ in the loop to correct it and it makes the amp sound artificial. Its very strange and another bullet point on why I hate the amp.

Again, overall I'm fascinated with the amp but there are much better amps out there IMO that can cop what it ultimately sounds like.
