After re-tube an amp with some L EL84’s, which I’m pretty sure I’m going with TAD’s on that one, and also four 12AX7’s.

Just seeing what you all are finding good success with for high gain amps.

Thx

My brand new Mesa Mark VII had 2 bad preamp tubes from the get go. One was an obvious manufacturing defect in the glass. Both Mesa branded as expected. The obvious defect tube was extremely microphonic. The other slightly noisy.

So far I’ve liked the PS Vane 12ax7’s I’ve tried. Has become my V1 tube in a few amps and replaced more in amps that needed more than V1 replaced.

I just buy a bunch of JJ/Tesla ECC83S (short plate) tubes and run them through the tester and check for microphonics and reasonably close to 100 gain. If they're good on day 1 they seem to last for 1000s of hours.

If I didn't have the tester I'd just put them in V1 of a high gain amp, see if they sounded good, and tap with a pencil. Any ones that sounded bad or went *boink* too bad I'd throw out.

EH7025 in V1 of all my amps….love them there.

JJ83s in middle spots

Gold Pin EH12ax7 in PI (NOT 7025)

I also like Mullard CV4004 in V1 but I had a couple go bad pretty quick.

That's what came in V1 of my UK67. I'll be honest, I wound up pulling it, and I don't even remember what I replaced it with. Maybe an old "Perfect Connection" tube I had out of a Metaltronix M1000 I had many years ago.

My buddy tried some of the new Tung sols in his Marshall and they were nice sounding and quiet.
TungSol in combo with 9th Gen Shuguang are the best..... One or two 9th Gen in combo with current production TunSol for the win in the Preamp section IME for higher gain ^_^

As far as quality goes, everything seems to be hit or miss. My preference recently has been EHX

Stay away from new 10th gen Chinese. All of mine are microphonic. Noise is reasonable but they’re unreliable on top of it.

I just tried an EH 7025 in V1 of my JTM45 and it wasn't for me either.

Did some tube rolling last weekend when I was hearing a noise. One of 3 JJ 12ax7's had that top plate looking all pocked, like war torn France.

So I started messing around.
EH 7025's
EH 12ax7's
Tung Sol 12ax7's
JJ 12ax7's
Another set of EH but I can't remember the number (ends with a 3?)
EH12ay7
RCA longplate

So far, really liking the JJ's with a Tung Sol in V1.

I don't know that any of them are more reliable than any other. What does probably vary is the level of screening/testing that happens between the production line and you. I tend to like Tung Sol and Mullard tubes in various preamp positions (still a JJ for the cathode follower and either a Sovtek LP or EI Yugo for the PI). Given the option though, I'll buy the GT or TAD-branded versions, or buy through one of a variety of radio supply-type shops who do more extensive testing.

I do think NOS tubes were constructed a bit better. The higher volumes being made gave them margins that allowed greater precision and care during production. Honestly though, I don't think they were THAT much better off the line, it's more so that manufacturers back then could afford to discard tubes that weren't up to spec.

I have had TungSol RI preamp tubes for years and have had good luck with them. Good tone and reliable to me anyway.

JJ's are my go-to. I tinker with other preamp tubes in certain positions just for fun, but JJ's have been pretty consistent, cheap, and sound decent. There are WAY better tubes out there for sure, but it's a balance of cost vs performance
