Got the HRG RI last night, first impressions are good. Wanted to start a thread to talk about it as well as post when I get the various comparo vids done that I'm planning.

First some back story for those who don't know me, I've had 9 IIC+/++ of every iteration and 32 Marks in total. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with them in that while I really do love playing Marks, I do recognize that they have things they aren't good at (like any amp) and also believe the C+ is over-hyped. All that being said, I keep buying them and here we are.

When the DRG C+ RI came out I didn't jump. I don't care for triode at all. Even with pentode Simul, it's fine, but I prefer straight pentode A/B amps as I feel Simul introduces a touch of mud from the blending. Tight & bold is just where my playing style is, regardless of what the internet values. I was fortunate to play a DRG RI when @frontline205 came by with his and generally speaking I was very impressed compared to the V, JP & VII. I thought Mesa did a fine job on that RI and while I still preferred the OG, the RI was very good & I felt I could recommend it without reservation to guys who couldn't swing an OG. The feels, overtones, harmonics were all there. There was a slight processed thing going on that pretty much all new amps seem to have, but aside from that I felt it's pretty legit. And, in the accuracy department, the reverb still sucked.

So, when the HRG was announced I became interested. Being a Coli guy I would of course prefer a RI of one of these, but my sources told me not to hold my breath so I decided to take a swing and the HRG RI arrived yesterday. First impressions:
  • Right out of the box & was super impressed with the amount of push the rhythm channel has. VERY punchy, which the newer amps generally are not. This amp moves air.
  • On the lead channel I felt it has a more convincing MOP tone than most of my OG C+ have, when running all amp straight in.
  • The harmonics, overtones, dynamics, bounce and general feels under the fingers are very good. Very much a C+ here, like the DRG RI, but with noticeably more tightness and push. Also the individual note clarity on a big high gain chord is fantastic.
  • The lead tone is good, but more like other modern Mesas and not quite as liquidy as the OG or the DRG RI, as expected.
  • The reverb still sucks.
First impressions, this HRG is quality-wise on point with the Recto RI, which is FANTASTIC. That said, I'm keeping in mind that reissuing a great Rectifier is not as big of a lift as reissuing a great IIC+..

Is it a keeper? Time will tell for sure. For me, how an amp performs in the live band is king, and I'm looking forward to finding out. If they improved the mid control on this RI as well as they did on the Recto RI, it won't be hard for this HRG RI to out perform the OG C+ in the live band (which is one area that I've always been underwhelmed with them).

I'm planning on reamp comparo vids of the HRG vs..
  • OG C+
  • JP2C
  • Recto RI
So stay tuned!

Do you have a Coli to compare it against? Debating grabbing one but I don’t want a lot of overlap.

Looking forward to this! I really don't need another amp but between the IIC+ HRG RI and the 90's Dual Rectifier RI I'm getting tempted to pull the trigger on one! I already have a Mark III purple stripe, Mark V 35, and a Mark VII. I love all of the Mark's I own! I'm leaning towards the Dual Rectifier RI only because I never owned any type of Rectifier. However, after hearing rumors of a possible Triple Rectifier RI being released I may hold out and get that if the rumors are true! BTW, your reviews and feedback on the DR RI and now this Mark IIC+ HRG RI aren't helping me wanting to get one now!

The DR RI is phenomenal. Can't recommend it enough.

Word on the street is there's a Triple RI coming in ~January, but it'll be blackout and closer to $4K.

Sorry to derail your thread but any knowledge if the Triple RI will be 3 channels?

Fantastic first impressions. Dang, it almost makes me want to pull the trigger on one. Also, it's good to hear that they're still able to make a great amp or two under Gibson's watch, because they're probably gonna be there for the foreseeable future.

Also, it's a bit disappointing that if a Triple Rec RI comes, it will only be available in a black chassis. A chromed out Triple Rec RI would truly be the end-all of Rectos I think.

I have a JP2C but if this reissue HRG sounds more like the OG then i might sell the JP and get one, i care more about tone and feel than versatility and features. Ive had the JP since 2016 and its a nice amp but if theres something better sounding then i dont care about letting go of it, it would be nice to hear a clip comparing them both.

Working on this, I know a local guy with a JP.

My initial impressions are that if you're not using it to gig, RI all day long.

Alright day 2 report- I jammed tonight with my other guitarist from my 80s band and his 2205 / 70s LPC rig. We put up the OG KRG C+ as well as the HRG RI against it while jamming out songs. I got some phone clips I'll work up and share as well.

The full band mix is still a to do, and first impressions playing with another guitarist I think it will be what I'd hoped for in that the HRG has better cut & better mids than the OGs do and for that, like with the Recto RI, it's going to sit better in the live band which is important to me. That little bit of fizz I'm hearing in the RI just makes it sound more brash & cutting against another guitar.

The OG did the same thing they always do for me in that they're TOO smooth and when playing rhythms tend to hide against another amp (especially if it's British voiced). Starting with identical settings, I ended up having to go +3 on the presence on the OG to get it to kind of sit & cut like the HRG RI was doing, and even so, the RI was just a lot more in your face.

That said in that smoothness, the OG was tighter on the chugs- but to be fair- it's a KRG so that could be the power section.

I had made a comment about the lead tone earlier, and tonight with some volume cranked in there I have to walk that back. it's REALLY GOOD. Cranked it with both the JCM800 cab as well as the Recto cab, and they both killed though the Recto cab was definitely more cutting. I'll have that in the phone clips.

So, day 2 of 45 on the return policy, the amp is currently not in any danger of leaving. :) Hell, it may be time to cash out on the OG sooner than I thought..?

Oh I forgot to mention- testing last night we both preferred the cleans on the RI. They're more snappy & punchy. If buttery & warm cleans are your thing you'd probably prefer the OG, and realistically there are better clean amps available if that's your thing.

So the HRG the highest wattage version of this amp they’re going to make?
