Where can metal go from here?

I think the genre has hit a technology barrier. In the past rock/metal was periodically refreshed by someone coming up with some new sound. The Dual Rectifier is 23 years old. We've been listening to modern high gain amps for over two decades and hotrodded Marshalls for over three decades. The...

    Seller's Remorse?

The one amp I sold that I would like again is an Orange AD-30... But I don't want one bad enough to spend the money to get another.

    Anyone using open back cabs??

I have an open back 1x12 that I stack on top of a closed back 1x12. It's not as full or thumpy as a closed back 2x12, but the open back cab does a better job of spreading the sound around the room.

    Does the GAS ever end?!

Neither did I. I switch it up between a Recto and a Mark V. Between the pair of them they hit all the sounds I want. I'm probably fortunate that I'm not into Marshalls... I don't have a whole lot of flavours I have to choose from.

    Does the GAS ever end?!

4 or 5 years ago I heard two recordings of me playing the same song on two totally different rigs recorded a few years apart. One was with an EMG loaded Les Paul into a Dual Rectifier with Recto 4x12, and the other was a PAF loaded Les Paul into some old school dirt pedal into an Orange AD140...

    Does the GAS ever end?!

I think that if you're always trying to sound like someone else it'll never end, but if you're doing your own thing and you finally figure out what works best for you it does stop. Things finally clicked for me a few years ago and I havent had gas since (mostly selling off excess shit that I...

Which is the real amp vs Axe fx

He's correct... I'm in my iPad. This was my point. While its pretty obvious that all three tracks sound a little different - even on my sonically challenged iPad - most of us aren't in any position to accurately interpret which is which based on a couple of compressed samples over the...

Which is the real amp vs Axe fx

All three sound like I'm listening to an MP3 being played through the 1/2 inch speaker on my iPad.

Cathode follower is V3. After experimenting I've gone back to using stock Mesa power tubes.

The shelf life of gear value

From where I'm at (I'm too old to know what teenagers are actually doing) it looks like modellers are mini-amps are killing the full size market. A brand new Mini-Recto or 5150 III is $999, and they're even cheaper used. Factor in that the current crop of teenagers are largely conformists...

Why can't Mesa Boogie just admit it?

I remember being told that NAMM was costing too much for too little return. With the Internet they can reach a far broader audience for less money. You can tell they've been investing that money in improving their website and gear demos the last couple of years.

Why can't Mesa Boogie just admit it?

My Mark V has a push/pull pot, but truthfully I figured the reason for moving away from push/pull pots was because the mini-switches let them do three way switching instead of only two.

Mesa Dual rec Rev F boost options

Noted. Is it the same basic flavour of boost as the 808?

Why can't Mesa Boogie just admit it?

I'm pretty sure that if Mesa re-released a 2 channel amp with shared gain, tone and volume controls, a shitty effects loop and mediocre reverb more people would be disappointed than excited.

Mesa Dual rec Rev F boost options

If you like Ola Englund's recto demos the 808 is all over them. I think he shows his setting in some.

Why can't Mesa Boogie just admit it?

I always figured that if they took an actual IIC+ and hid it inside a modern chassis people would take one look at it and complain it doesn't sound like a real IIC+.

Mesa Dual rec Rev F boost options

Gain 9:00 Volume: 3:00 to full up Tone: 3:00 to full-up Realistically, any tubescreamer type pedal will work, but the OD808 is the classic choice. For whatever reason it blends a little better with the Recto's natural sound and if feels like you're playing through a single unit instead the...
