I hear ya, and I realize all that. Just seems the SLO preamp is optimized for the power section of the SLO. To me you wouldn't really know what you would be getting in the end if you just drop a different preamp the existing amp, where as a mod from someone like Dave would be a complete tweak...

What foot controller depends on how much you want to spend and what you are using it for. To me the Liquid Foot would give anything a run for the money right now IMO..It is more the the GCP, but you get a lot more interaction with the Axe. You also get updated LED's each preset change that...

I agree, the gate thing can really kill your sound when you roll off the volume. There is a block called a gate/expander that is footswitchable you can use in conjunction with the front gate, switch it out when you roll down and you get better response than just the front gate cranked.

You'll never know until you try one. The 15 day trial period is pretty handy !
