Looking over the reviews on Amazon for that Explorer-1, you can see these guitars were selling for ~ $300 not very long ago.

Couldn't determine what material these are made of. I've been partial to acrylic pickups (Gravity, V-picks) but they really don't last that long.

You sound like me with my LP. Finnicky, fickle, maddening, awesome beast that needed the right pickups. Ended up getting a BK Nailbomb set (used, here on this site, actually) and it was both a surprise and a pleasure to realize I found the set I will never replace. That was 10+ years ago.

I can speak from personal experience. My keeper Explorer tried out Afwayus, Aldrich(es?), BKP Nailbombs, even Gibson 57/57+, and still with all those awesome pickups, it wasn't right. Mrs. I bought this for my b-day, so I mean it's mine for life, so I may as well figure out what works...

They're in my Hyperion, and one of the only guitars I've left as stock (I'm a serial pickup-swapper by trade). They work well with high gain, and are perfect for this guitar. I've given thought to buy a set for a non-Balaguer guitar, until I look in my parts drawer and see all the other unused...

I have 2 BG Hellabuckers, one black and one zebra. Black is 50mm, zebra is 53mm. I also have a Manlius Asphalt in black. 50mm. All are short-legged. None have been direct mounted. PM me if you want more info/pics.
