that's southern white redneck culture that they have adopted. It's the truth. I noticed it when I moved to New Hampshire in the 90's. First job I had up there the guy training me called me a silly bastard or dumb bastard....I grabbed a block of wood and swung at his head....luckily I missed him but it was close. I told him I knew who my father was and he better never call me a bastard. Scared him to death...plus a couple other people that saw it. Come to find out they use the word bastard as an adjective(?)....hotter than a bastard. colder than a bastard, snowing like a bastard....kinda funny.....
Insults/name calling are terms of endearment in New England. If you work in the trades and your co-workers/boss aren’t calling you things like “pig fucker”, “rat bastard”, “fuckin’ mo-mo” in your first two weeks on the job, you most likely won’t have the job by the end of the month.
My first job out of high school was industrial roofing and being the FNG you get all the grunt work, like carrying rolls of rubber up a 50 foot ladder while the guys are shaking the fucking ladder on the ground, or ripping pitch and getting covered in fiberglass and tar and no one tells you to wear long sleeves or to cover your face. I kept my mouth shut and just did the work until a foreman one day was riding my ass HARD and I snapped, called him a string of names and cursed my face off and he pats me on the back and says “Man I thought we were gonna have to fuck your girlfriend for you to finally say something. Don’t be takin’ no shit from these guys, they’re all a bunch of lazy bastards milkin’ the clock”, which is Maine-talk for “Welcome aboard”
