I dont buy a ton of guitars, but most of the ones I have bought have been new. They were either good deals (blowout prices), or situations where I played 10+ of them in stores, and their necks and such varied so much that when I found the one that spoke to me, I bought it on the spot. I buy most of mine to keep, so I like them to be in excellent shape.

i'd rather and would buy used, but my "need" for custom 8 string guitars that feature fanned frets etc, etc, and more insanity etc.

but if the opportunity arises, *which does arise sometimes, i buy used, and prefer almost anything used, i don't particularly care about aesthetic nicks dings, on amps i don't care if it's genuinely fucked aesthetically as long as it functions as it should,

guitars i'm a little not as forgiving with aesthetics vs function, form/function, or whatever, but used is where's it's at homie!!!, like fuck new cars, as soon as you pull it off the lot it's depreciated 30-40% or something insane, same with most guitars

yeah

I'm actually waiting on a custom GMW now, and I'd really like to order a reverse headstock Jackson strat style at some point in not so distant future.

I haven't bought a guitar in new condition, from a music store, in probably 10 years, if not more. Going used has saved me good money, especially in my younger days when I would flip them every other month. That said, with all the challenges that come from buying used, either through forum, reverb or evilbay, I'm contemplating the idea of buying new again. Yes, I'll pay more, but I no longer flip and there is a lot less risk.

I'm looking at a limited run, 2017 58' reissue LP with slight flame for $3,795 brand new.

Anyone else think like this?

If you are sure about what you want and can afford it,why not ?
I'm sure my next will be new because it will be built to my specs.other than that,no I wouldn't buy new . I flip guitar alot and have learned over the years no matter how much I like a guitar eventually its probably going out the door .

Other than the LP replica I had built which I finally received in 2015, the last new guitar I bought was in 2012, a Pete Townsend Signature SG. Just don't have the room for any more guitars & amps at this point.

I do both but of course love to save where I can. And I must admit, if I see somebody (for example) that owns several Les Pauls/Marshalls/whatever selling one my first thought is; "worst of the bunch, do not want". That may have a sliver of truth to it but people still sell good stuff all the time.

At this point in my life, I’ve been through so many guitars that I really only care for high end, specs that I want, type guitars. I’ve had several custom Skervesen, Mayones and Blackat builds and I’ve been bitten by the Suhr bug (1 new Modern 7 and 2 used mint 6 strings). I’m probably 50/50on the new vs used. I don’t mind as long as it’s the guitar I want. If I can find it cheaper used, then that’ll almost always be my first choice.

However, I still look at lower end LTD guitars if it’s got the specs I want. Like I’m really gasing for an HSS fixed bridge guitar and ESP has the LTD M-403 that fits the bill. I’m thinking to pick that up and customize the shit out of it. I first searched for used, none to be found, so debating buying new.

I also don’t really believe that buying/selling used is as bad as it feels. There’s always been flaky people when buying/selling, but the vast majority are cool if you’re cool to them and treat them right and with some respect.
I’m always comfortable buying used, but I’ve always been nervous selling because guitar players are just naturally nit picky as shit. I get that, I’m more nervous that I may have missed a chip or ding or something when selling.

I have a standard set of maintenance and electrical upgrades I do to any used guitar I get. You can't just buy one with it all dialed in, unless you bought it from me after I went through it.

The only problem with that is when I'm done with them, they're generally keepers, so I don't put any up for sale...which is why there are 28 guitar cases in the closet, and five more in the shop. LOL

One day I'll start thinning the herd, probably when I move to Nevada to retire.

Disregarding Custom Shop guitars I spec myself, I buy new when the price is right for the right guitar. Otherwise I go used..
This! Need another option in the poll:

"Buy new if the spec's/price is right"

So true about going out the door, even if you like it a lot..its happened to me lots..I have been putting together parts mutts for about 4-5 years now, well as soon as I learned more about it,and have had really good luck doing it that way,but even I just broke down 2 weeks ago and found a nice Iron Label Ibanez with a chip in it listed as "Blemished"..regular selling price I believe $900+taxes,I payed $499.99 out the door..I am truly happy I bought it,it plays and sounds amazing, but even today i am back on my parts mutts..its crazy !

I know I am about to buy 3 of the new LTD lineup new. :D
Which ones ? I love LTD's and eyeing 1 myself, supposedly straight from ESP over the phone, yes it will be out fairly soon..so I am jonesing for sure ! Which one(s) ?

I hate shipping and Craigslist is such an epic beat down. I just started buying new

In 35+ years I’ve bought dozens of new guitars and maybe 2 used ones.

I always buy guitars used *if I can find it*. Right now I'm jonesing a bit for a Heritage h525, and those are hard to come by, so I might have to go new.

4 of my 5 guitars are used! I saved an absolute pile of $$$ and in reality, the guitars were really barely used but way less than new. Love them all! No issues.

Yep. Bought 4 new Historic RI LPs this year... and a Suhr Classic. All new.

Not opposed to buying used... but all the stars have to align. Price, specs, seller, et al. I'm picky... and I need to like the guitar more so than just the price. Buying, selling, trading used gear is not like it was 10 or even 5 years ago.

even 5 years ago the classifieds on here were cool. I remember two full pages or more daily of classifieds. sometimes recently there is a total of one third of a page on here in the classifieds and it is the same items as the previous 3 days.

I have a new axe on order through guitar center, purchased when they were offering 18% off a full price item. It would have to be a really special axe to pay full retail, but 20ish percent off seems reasonable for the right guitar.
