They’ll pick up the item from you and return it to him, he’ll have to refund you the money and probably recieve zero compensation, always pack in NEW boxes with large bubble and use FedEx, since I started this method I’ve had zero issue. Ups is trash imo.

Yup...
I agree. I've had trouble with them. Filed a claim, and they said my box which was new wasn't quite as thick as it should be, so was denied. Took awhile too. So my advice is if it's something you want to keep and/or repair, make accommodations with the seller. Like partial refunds and then don't give it to UPS. But, if you don't want it, then let them take it. Point being, get the refund before you let them take it. Cuz the refund the seller only...not you.

The seller should refund/partial refund you right away, and let him deal with UPS. If he is a "wait and see what UPS says" thats not good. I've sold a mesa head that the head box was damaged. Guy was in LA, which was cool cuz he drove to Mesa and Mesa charged $312 of something for a new head box. So I refunded him that price right away. I had to wait for UPS, but they did pay me that money back.

UPS impaled a JCM 800 combo I had. It was double boxed, foam etc. Filed a claim. Denied. Basically the only way to win a claim with them is to pay extra for a UPS store to pack it for you. Then you’re covered.

I just shipped an Ibanez recently...double boxed and in a hard case through FEDEX. Due to covid, their hub station locally doesn't take packages, so you actually have to go to a FEDEX copy location. They actually because of value declared had to open it. She only opened the first box up and asked me is this another box? I said yup, double boxed and in a hard case. She didn't bother with the rest and sealed it back up and charges were like $52 shipped for $1100 insured. what I liked too is I think by an employee opening and verifying it was what it was, kinda takes your liability of damage once they possess it? arrived safe anyway....just saying what locally fedex is doing.

I wouldn’t use UPS to ship a box of cotton balls. Fuck UPS, FedEx for this guy.

I think they both (Ups and FedEx) have problems. I had an issue with FedEx loosing an amp. I refunded the guy and spent 2 weeks screwing around with the claim. One day the amp showed up at my house, the box is ripped open along with bubble wrap. Amp has a nice dent. I just kept it, never tried to resale.

EDIT to say: On a good note, the FedEx worker who was working my case did call me and was going to pay a settlement on my lost amp. So that was nice. When I told her that the amp showed up but is damaged, she said I needed to open a new case. All I could do was laugh and say no thanks and keep it.

Both shippers use automated systems where boxes need to withstand about a 2 foot drop. It’s just luck of the draw sometimes.

Very possible he has a better chance on a claim if it was in the original packing, the only claims I know are getting taken care of recently are with FedEx.

Reallly shitty that the seller gets my purchase $$, a refund from UPS, plus the damaged item. Don't like that I am reliant on the seller for a refund.

Claim has been filed, we'll see what USP says. The box is too damaged for return shipping, so they'll have to repackage
If you paid with PayPal, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

I sold my modded 2204 to BubbaStain a put it in the foam holders, wrapped it in bubble wrap, then loaded it with styrofoam peanuts, then I took it to UPS and had them place it in a second box. Somehow they were still able to crack the headshell. I spent basically $200 bucks for them to screw me out of my claim. They tried to say that it wasnt packed well enough. I literally used every technique in the book. I insured it for $1500 and was only asking for them to replace the Sourmash headshell which is about 225-250. Thank god he took that amp out of the headshell before they collected it.

I've been dealing with this for over 2 months and it still isn't resolved. Bubbastain has been really understanding and patient. They have now approved the claim and now I'm just waiting for them to cut me a check. I basically had to sell the amp to cover having to move with little notice and I really didnt have the extra money after moving to refund. Seriously UPS can fuck up a wet dream.

I'm glad its finally wrapping up and them taking responsibility for their fuck up but I will never ship another amp with UPS. They will use any excuse possible to weasel out of paying you.

I’ve been on the buyers end of UPS and their ways ever since I bought my Monomyth from Clint666 here. He’s been the one that has had to deal with their shady ways. They managed to crack the headshell. It was packed well and double boxed. I took the amp out of the headshell and only let them take that. Initially (weeks later) denied the claim. It’s still not over, but I guess the recently decided to pay out for a new headshell. I’m pretty sure they haven’t actually paid him yet though. Who knows how long they’ll take for that??

This is the reason I don’t want to ship my Hermansson Laney PA I’m selling.

never use peanuts for an amp, they shift and compress. Only use rigid foam

I got a damaged case 2 months ago, and seller filed a claim. Crickets..

However, I don't think it was damaged in shipping, I think the seller lied about it's condition. May have lied about the claim too, who knows...

Well it wasnt exactly peanuts it was those round foam disks that Nik ships his amps with.

man you have to follow up with them cause if you dont they dont do shit. They had the broken headshell from the amp for a week or two just sitting there without notifying me of the status. On top of that everytime I call back they say "oh I was getting ready to call you..." or "I will call you back tomorrow" only to not hear from them until I call back. Also they can damage and amp without any outward appearance to the packaging. My amp was was in damn good shape considering it was only 2-3 months old and it had never moved away from my cab. Somehow these idiots manage to split the headshell which tells me 1. they dropped it and 2. they see a package being insured as an invitation to fuck it up. The ONLY way I would ever ship UPS again is if they package it cause if they have any wiggle room to get out of paying they will.

I recently dealt with a damage claim through UPS for a new item I bought. It wasn’t obvious from the box itself, but after opening it was clear it had been dropped from high up or something heavy was dropped on it. The seller filed the claim, and UPS said they had to pick up the item to inspect it so they could determine if it was packed properly or not. I packed it up exactly like it was when it arrived. After they picked up the item they took it back to one of their facilities. They ended up determining the fault was on their end, so they paid the claim to the seller and I was shipped a new one. It was pretty cut and dry in my favor thankfully. However, UPS never shipped the item back to the seller. After they determined fault and paid the claim, they destroyed it. They figure if they’re paying it out, they don’t want it back in circulation for someone to use. I’m not sure if it’s different when it’s an individual instead of a business, but that’s how it played out on my end.

That's the only way I ship anymore. It cost more, but what choice is there in order to be protected?

Yep. Only way to guarantee coverage. One thing I also learned was, never ship around Xmas. Ever. They are too busy and swamped; with temp workers hired for the holidays. Recipe for disaster.

I had them deny a claim FROM THE GODDAMN UPS STORE. I sold a badcat combo, paid a gasquillion for packing and shipping thru Ups store and they broke the head shell. The buyer initially lost his shit with me and I said don’t worry it’s fine. They initially denied it and before I could fight harder the buyer said to not worry about it.

UPS will ALWAYS deny your first claim, you have to appeal it and get another music store/business to write a letter stating the packaging you used was exactly what the manufacturer uses or better. If the claim is denied by appeal you will have to file a small claims court case in your county then send UPS a letter for an offer to settle before the court date. I have had a 100% success rate in winning UPS claims and like I said they always deny on the first one, about 60% win on appeal and after that you have to file small claims.

When filing small claims you serve the agent who is registered by UPS in your state to notify them of your claim. Anyone dealing with a denied UPS claim feel free to PM me if you need help or specific info.
