Parts have skyrocketed lately due to demand. A lot of stuff is out of stock or backordered. I’d be surprised if you could build a metro kit today for less than 2k transformers included.
If I didn't like mine so much, I would put it up for sale.

Get the Marshall. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it has to have its original caps changed. If it was played regularly they might be just fine. I have a 72 Trem that has the original Daly’s. Sounds amazing, no bulges on the can caps. Only reason I change them is if there are visible issues; ie bulges or even powder starting to come out; but if neither of those are present but the amp sounds thin or ‘off’ in some way then change. Never had an issue in all my years playing/gigging vintage Marshall’s.
Those other amps are nice but getting a clone just means you won’t be getting the real thing.
Agreed. I keep saying on here life’s too short for just “nice” gear that later just gets sent packing. The Marshall is one to likely hang on to. Most of the “nice” gear (like the others mentioned) gets boring pretty fast and no longer “nice” in my mind. Better to just skip to the special gear asap imo

I have about $1300 into my Metro clone build, but I sprung for Merren iron. It gets compliments from everyone, even when I'd rather use something else. I always bring it and another head to practice and gigs and everyone says the Metro slays. I have about $850 into my real Marshall 1987xl. It was a late night, drunken eBay bid on a "needs repair, parts only" listing. It needed tubes and a new head shell. When I A/B'ed it with my real '72 1987, I could not hear a difference.

Not every Marshall is created equal, but YMMV. If that amp was a 68-70 it would be more attractive but the price would be north of $3500.00. If you want a plexi with modern accoutrements, loop, built boosts, footswitch plexi modes 67 to 68 modded 68 look no further than the Metroplex.

If you want a modern equivalent to an old plexi I would say you can't beat the Suhr, but it doesn't have a loop, if you can get one in the 2000 2500 range.
