Sounds good. Is that stock other than the ppmiv? Seems amply gainy and bright.

While we're here, what is the difference in later model superlead's circuits as to say a '68?

Nice, I just got this mod done to my '78 Super Lead yesterday. I'm gonna do a quick clip when I get home from work tonight and I'll post it here, too.

I modded the circuit a little. ;)
One of the difference's is the '78 has a 1k V2A cathode resistor and a '68
has a 820r & .68uf bypass V2A cathode.
The NFB in a '78 is 100K and in a '68 is 47k.
The '67 / '68 V1 shared cathode (820r/330uF).
The '68 is shared cathode? I thought it was the first year they split. What year did they split it?

I've read that the later models got brighter and more gainy and was curious as to the circuit changes they implemented that was responsible. The differences you outlined seems to be not greatly different.

Just whipped up this little clip yesterday of some classic rock tones.

Nuno Washburn with LX500 bridge plugged straight into a '78 Super Lead (1959) modded with PostPIMV & Celestion V30's.

Check it out & let me know what you Guys think.

Killer clip, great job !!!!!!

Sounds great Michael.

Sounds great! Did you do anything else to in than the MV? Do you still have that great sounding 2204? :)

Wow, this sounds great! This clip is plugged straight in with no pedals?? I have a dead stock 75 Superlead that I am using a ho atten/variac on but yours sounds a bit more hotrodded. Maybe I will try your spec.

Yes plugged straight in no pedals.

Looks like that setup is to get rid of the woofies on the normal channel. Is this how yours is setup? Mine has plenty of low end so I just use the bright channel with the bass turned down. Still ample low end. I'm not sure why. Everything I've looked at appears stock '68 spec. It does have MM trannies, and I've wondered if that is the reason.

That resistor on the presence lug to ground....I've heard of this mod. What does it do to the tone?

I have the original Dagnall's in both my amps.
Which I believe makes a big difference.
The 4k7 resistor pres. lug to ground pushes the mids a little harder to my ears.
I have considered picking up a Heyboer OT or maybe even a Magnetic Components OT (they are pretty cheap and apparently great bang for the buck). Just to see the difference.

How would you describe the difference in the Dagnall and MM OTs (if you're familiar with both)?

70's Dagnalls sound the best to my ears, creamy top-end.

Heard great things about these replacement tranny's.
Yeah, those are the Mercury Components trannies.

A nifty comparison of 4 PTs. I've listened to these a lot. My amp reminds of the tone of the MMs, which is darker with more an emphasis on the lower mids. It doesn't seem to have the crunchiness of the others. The Mercury Component (classic tone) is better, but I don't know, I think I like the Heyboers the best. That said, the Classic Tones are considerable less expensive (or they were).
