Whatever works over the material you're playing over, as in, the notes contained in the scale are used in the chord/key changes you're playing over. But thinking in terms of passing tones, just about anything will work if you hear where you're going with the melodies.

Deppends on the song. Aeolian for the most part and then mixolydian followed by dorian.

My favorite is what I dubbed the Mixalotta scale/mode.

Usually natural minor / pentatonic mixed with whatever feels/sounds good.

I like em all but I like the Phrygian and natural minor modes the best.

I lean towards neo-classical styles so the minor modes in addition with the melodic minor, harmonic minor and diminished scales works well for me. The good thing is I don't have to think about them. I just use them

I like the sound of dorian. I force myself to go through them all once in a while but I always come back to dorian.

I use to think about all the modes as separate scales. If the chord progression is all natural notes, C major or A natural minor, I now look at all the modes in that key center the same scale. I am try to see the guitar in a more linear fashion, like the way a piano player sees his keyboard.

This approach has helped me from staying with in boxes when soloing.

I also have been trying to play more to the chords, rather than the key center. Switching between major and minor scales as the chords change.
