Here is a photo after some minor tweaking. Can you spot any difference?

Different jewel?

Tube swap? Second photo has fat tubes.

bingo!
I pulled out the EL84s and their 9-pin sockets, did a bit of metal work, installed octal sockets, and modded the amp to work with 6V6s.

Yea...became easier to answer once I scrolled back a little further.

Amp sounds nice btw. Was the clip el84's or 6v6 (apologies if you typed it somewhere and I missed it)

Amp demos are porn for my ears!

Thanks for the complement.
Those demos were done with the 84s; hopefully I can create equally bad ones with 6V6s this week. I was very happy with the tone tonight. I hope I can capture it with my mic.

Any updates ? I'm curious as to how this baby sounds with 6v6's. I'm starting a similar build, and trying to decide between el84's and 6v6's.

Why not do one EL34, but have it output at 18 watts? Like for what they did with the SL5. Though my technical knowledge is not great, so maybe this wasn't possible for reasons I don't know.

In my case, the chassis I'm using has holes for two octal sockets, and I just can't bear the thought of leaving one vacant. Why have less tubes, when you can have more tubes ?

The amp (set up with 6V6s) was sold back in July. I liked that particular amp better with 6V6s than with EL84s, especially with the gain and MV up high.

The new owner said this (on the MLP forum):
08-31:
"...bias check...plug in...
HOLY S**T!!!!!!

slayer, judas preist, van halen, opeth..... it's all HERE! and the volume is totally reasonable and controllable

the amp runs silent too... i've been playing with cleans and they are shockingly good! It has a nice sweet spot when you can "bloom" your note with some soulful hair... I can't freakin believe how good this is! and it's good(exeptionally good) at bedroom levels!

John....thank you! really, really, THANK YOU!"

Thinking outside the box! Nice!

Unfortunately, a single EL34 won't pump out 18 watts. The Fargen miniplex uses two EL34s in a parallel single ended arrangement for about 14 watts.

Single-ended amps sound different than push-pull amps, which is one reason to turn to lower-power tubes in push-pull design....

Good call on the 6v6s. Anymore builds like this planned?

If you haven't already, start a separate thread with pics of your build....I, for one, would love to see it come along.

I'm doing something similar but much more advanced in some ways right now. But running into problems with my chosen transformers (toroids).

Will do. I don't mean to hijack this thread. I'm still just in the planning stages.

If you need any help choosing components (e.g., PT, OT), just let me know...

I've got the iron covered, but I might want to pick your brain a bit about the circuit, if you don't mind.

sure. Shoot me an email when you want to get the ball rolling.
