Anyone ever had one of these units back in the day?

It's pretty much the same as the BBE Sonic Maximizer.

-I thought they were voodoo, a placibo, a crosswalk button, what are your thoughts?

I think you're talking about running a boost in front of a Major?

I've never used it but your base tone is so damn good that this doesn't seem to add that much. I could hear the difference but could not decide if I thought the tone had actually improved. It sounded stellar either way to me.

What exactly is it doing?

I don´t know exactly what those Rocktrons do, but the major thing with enhancers is that they work by splitting the signal into bands and delaying them by very, very tiny amounts of time, basically to keep the bass from eating up the treble at the speaker end and adding brilliance in the process. There can also be various combinations of harmonic distortion, phase shifting and plain old EQ scooping going on too. It´s basically to get a clearer and less dull sound, and for some applications they work great.

They work great if you're using a PA with crappy speakers.

Yes, that´s one of the things they were made for. Also for trying to salvage old tapes or shoddy recordings.
