1960A with T75s: kinda awesome?

Boring story but I ended up with a JCM 900 Lead 1960a with white-label T75s. It's on casters and I was expecting it to sound like shrill buzzing bees.

But I really like it. It's brighter than my G12-65 cab, of course, but not piercing. And it has a great woody thump to it. I've used this type of cab before and thought they were functional but meh. But I genuinely really like at least this particular cab with all my amps (2204, 5150, Tremoverb, AC30, AFXIII).

Im a bit worried that this confirms I have significant high-frequency hearing loss.

Maybe you do, I'm pretty sure I do and every time I dial in an amp I scale back the treble for sure and sometimes the mids depending on the amp.

I will say though what version of the 75s? I know the older ones sound much different than the current models.
 
Celestion G12T75 are NOT bad speakers, just picky about the cab and the amp. And with proper EQ they cut like a lightsaber, far more than your usual V30

Depends on the amp for me. I either REALLY like these cabs or REALLY hate them. With my actual Marshall amps, (2203, 2204, JCM 2000 stuff) they fit like a glove. The SLO 100 also sounds surprisingly good through them.

My Splawns, surprisingly, I don't like through the 1960 cabs at all. I REALLY don't like 5150's through this cab either. I'll never ever call the G12T75 a bad speaker, but I'm picky about what amps I like them with.
 
I love my 1960B (from the late 90’s) but ONLY with Marshall or Marshall-based amps. All my other amps are shrill and lacking mids with that cab compared to others. Truthfully I prefer the 1960B with Marshall amps over the 1960BV, which some think is strange. Marshalls seem to benefit from the added chunk of the G12T-75.
 
I have the same JCM900 cabinet. I really like mine. I have played these heads through it: Marshall JCM900 100W, Marshall Vintage Modern 100W, Mesa Boogie Duel rectifier, Peavey 5150 and they all sound GREAT through it for Rock, Hard Rock, Metal and Clean tones.

The only time I didn't love the cabinet was when I used a Hughes and Ketner Triamp MK1 through it (Hard Rock). I don't know if it is the head or the cabinet because I haven't taken the time to try the head through a different cabinet yet.
 
All speakers vary a bit, even the same T75s from 97 a week apart might sound noticeably different. I think I've had 5 JCM 900 cabs with them over the years; one B cab in particular really sounded good..fat warm and thick without the screeching highs. It was also beat to shit; been around the block obviously. Bought another that was even older, like first yr 900 cab and it sounded like ass. Usually the earlier the better for me..I have an 83 first year 800 B cab with the vented 75s and they are like a brighter G12 65, nice cab.
Just gotta try them out.

This has been my experience lately as well. I've been wanting a more aggressive cab than my G12-65s. I use to have a Recto OS that was killer. Smooth and thick. Not scooped or boomy at all. I sold it a while back and lately have had three others (some older, some newer), and I hated them; they sound completely different from the cab that I remember. Very frustrating that cabs seem so variable.

The guy who does the York Audio IRs (which are awesome BTW) has said he has two Recto cabs that sound very different also. Seems weird. It's speakers in a box. Maybe we're all just crazy.
 
You'd think with the 'top' cabs, like Diezel/Mesa/Bogner etc they'd be more consistent but they do vary. I have a Mesa Traditional slant that I picked up recently; still has the hang tags. Sounded good but not AS good as the last one I had...but I think it needs more breaking in since it seems to be sounding better lately as I've been pummeling it a bit with my F Triple.
 
The Recto OS has featured different flavours of v30s over the years. Worst cab I've recorded, a 2012 Recto OS. Best cab I've recorded, an early 2000s Recto OS with the code T4335 stamped on the v30s.
 
Just like guitars cabs are made of wood and big chunks of wood so alot easier to get a bad sounding cabinet regardless of the speakers..We all know you have to pull 10-15 LP's off the rack to find a good one...

I also have an '83 JCM800 cab with the vented T75's and its not going anywhere..

Mic up all 4 speakers in your cab and see for yourself.... you’ll be surprised at how different all 4 speakers are in one cab, let alone a different one.

Also I don’t get why people love those 65s so much. Dark garbage to me. Absolutely no high end, maybe great for bedroom players but no cut whatsoever.

You have to turn them up. 65s don’t show their true colors until they are pushed. Then they will shit over any V30 cab out there, imo. There are also 40 different cones they used on them years ago, so there are variations. Have you played a vintage version or the Heritage reissue? The Heritage is nice but dark compared to my 79 Marshall slant…mine are the first version 3120 cones and sound more like a Greenback vs the later versions. The only thing a V30 cab has over a 65 is the tightness if you are a metal guy. But 65s can be tight enough for any other style. And, I do like V30s as I own a Traditional slant now, in the past I’ve owned 2 Bogner, 3 other Mesas, a Rivera, played a front loaded Diezel and played an Engl. All very nice and had their own thing going on. But I like bright, and with Marshall or my C+/Triple F my 65 cab cuts like a razor.

It's not a bad speaker, sounds good with british amps and with the proper cab. It also mixes well with other celestions.

It doesnt cut like a beast tho, but very few Celestion do imho. V30 cuts, but sounds bad in a full mix. G12H30 has teeth, but can sound thin. GBs sound fine, but they lack bite.
 
I've never even played thru T75's but I've always been told they need to be cranked loud as piss to properly fill out

Indeed. That’s why I was overjoyed when getting my OS slant and discovered it was an ‘03.

PS: I’ll bet you a joint that cab needs breaking in. My 2010-ish T4335 is killer but it’s been broken in properly. Mesas will sound better than UK or Chiners initially but still require significant (50+ hrs.) of break-in.
