What a difference a week makes huh? My brand new 2009 Charvel polar white So Cal model last Thursday.

Sounds great, plays nice. Don't forget to keep scrollling down :D

Then I saw some pictures of the "tortured" series Custom Shop Charvels and started thinking. I had some beat up old gold Grovers. I know old Charvels didn't have Grovers but they almost all had gold tuners. I had some brass hardware. I had an old Floyd in chrome. So yeah, the hardware doesn't match. Just like it never did in 1982-1985. This is what all our Charvels looked like. The only Floyds we could get were chrome.

I also wanted to relic the body. A guy I know does cool, amateur relic jobs on strats. He had a new belt sander. What the heck? I explained that old Charvels did not wear like vintage Fenders and I didn't want the typical forearm wear like you see on all the relic strats. Well he grabbed my body and was going to take some paint off the edge on the forearm area. First thing he's ever done with the new belt sander. So he slowly brings it down toward the belt sander....... and then it touches the belt sander. ZING ZING ZING zing zing! The belt sander had grabbed the body and and took the paint down to the wood in three spots about an inch apart right on the forearm cut. Then it made two other weird scuffs above where the bridge pickup would be. OK then buddy..... THANKS.

So I took the guitar home and spent a ton of time trying to make it look passable and salvageable. I ended up with the typical relic style sanded down forearm wear but with what I started with, I was happy to make it look like a guitar. I actually really dig it now. George Lynch style push pull pot to switch pickups. Seymour Duncan Custom/59 Alnico 5 Hybrid I modded in the bridge and a Duncan SSL-5 in the neck

Ouch. Doesn't look bad though.

What are you blocking the trem with?

Trem is not blocked. D-Tuna is coming off as soon as I get a replacement screw.

OMG! You don't like it? YOU don't like it?!!!! I feel I really, really might have made a big mistake with this decision. I wonder if it's too late to reverse what I did. I knew some people wouldn't like it, but never dreamed YOU wouldn't like it. I am so disappointed, bordering on devastated.

Man that looks fuckin awesome Curt!!

I dig the relic'ing and the fact that it has the non matching hardware like the old school Charvels add to the cool factor. Hum/Single just like my GMW Strathead too, simple but effective!

From the looks of it, you did make a mistake. And yes, it is too late to reverse it.

You see, when you post a "thread" on a "message board" you are opening yourself up to other peoples opinions. Those opinions may or may not coincide with yours. I guess you wanted everyone to love it so...

Woah man, that looks totally awesome! I could never tell it's a new guitar that's been poorly reliced! I'M JEALOUS!

I like it, now you just need to get a real wood neck for it.

Hey buddy, I know Charvels:

The necks on these new Charvels feel and play great. Are they the right tint of oil finish? Not straight out of the box.

And before Home and Garden channels interior design star RandyVanSykes chimes in, the couch was in a rehearsal studio and wasn't in my house, ever

i like the hardware change and the new pickups. that made the guitar look MUCH better

but im far from liking that fake relic'ed look

needs more work - paint job still has a shiny clearcoat

Thanks for the lesson on what happens on a message board. Very educational. Now do me a favor and read what you wrote to me and apply it to my response to you.

I know relic'ing is a polarizing thing. I know MANY people aren't going to like it. But as far as a shiny clear coat, my 1984 Charvel is still very shiny in the clear coat. Heck, the clear coat looks brand new next to where it is chipped down to the primer or around where all the checking is.

I dig it. If you want that old school san dimas look you have to go w/ brass hardware and chrome floyd or brass bridge.

I like it. I like the push/pull idea for changing pickups too.

Sorry dude. Jaeptus called dibs first. I sell stuff all day. I can tell when a guy is tearing something down because he wants to beat you up on the price. If Jaeptus passes, you're next. ;)
