James, thanks SO much for this, man!! LOVED hearing this.

Standouts to me:

1. the 1968 Marshall 50 w/ variac. I would NEVER let that amp go whoever has it. Hands down winner for me.
2. Reeves '78 was very impressive.
3. Soldano SLO
4. Wizard Modern Classic
5. Cameron Custom 75 - that thing brought it!

Lots of great tones there but these were my top 5.

mid gain in the room

That sounds like a nice beefy SLP. What's the Dragon?

I thought Lynch's SLO sounded the best of all of them....

Mark's modded Marshall Aldrich got my attention too.

In Part 2 I liked all of them but I'd drop the money on the Marsha or Lynch's SLO which was probably one of the best sounding SLO's I've heard. All those designers should pat themselves on the backs because those are top notch tones.
We have the same earz, the Friedman shit is for me, but i thought GL's SLO was awesome, when people said it sounded like ass, i'm like "what amp were you listening to?"

I know tone is subjective and all but this goes beyond that IMO. Very harsh overall with a loose, undefined low end. Even the guys in the room (see the other thread) said it was bad and that Mark thought it needed new tubes.
What are you guys hearing that's making you say it was good???

I agree on the bottom end, the bass pot was dimed and could have used a depth mod, and a SLO is the only 6L6 style amp for dirt i like.

Overall very saturated harmonic distortion, very tasty sounding, but the complex mid-range toans of the Friedmans ate most of the other amps for lunch, Dave must have a PhD in MIDZ.

the racto and pre 500 rectos sounded really similar, i dont know why people talk up the pre 500 so much ...... what was the serial number on the racto ???

i wonder what made the mark 5 catch on fire lol ......

i LOVED that red twin jet that was in the room, what was the power section ??? is that a new custom option hes offering for the twin jets ???

the Racto and the pre500 did absolutely NOT sound the same. now at all in any way. Perhaps you just hear the MESA tone that seems familiar. They were dialed in very differently, and FELT very different as well.
IF they had the same settings, perhaps that would be more direct comparison.

Mesa blamed the smokeout on a bad EL34 giving out, that took out a resistor.

The Red bogner was a prototype for the Super 70 amp to be unveiled soon. Reinhold's still working on it, hasn't finalized the amp yet. I was going to get my Twin Jet modded, but he asked me to wait until he was done making the new amp, in case I want to mod it to those specs...which right now are constantly changing.
it sure sounded like a winner though!

James,

Thanks for all the work, I really enjoyed reading/watching/listening to the event.

 Great thread! Now there is some reference if you want to compare or choose your next amp you are G.A.S.sing toward.

My favorites the Wizard MC100, and Marshall Jose killer tone

Thanks.

So I just played the Fortin Bones that was used for this video for awhile today...

I think that amp must not have been dialed in right for the amp shootout, as it really does sounds very good. Just the way it went...I blame the amp owner.

I shot a little video and will upload it later.

I think alot of us would love to own any of those amps, BTW was it your Mark V that took a shit? If so what's the prognosis?

Yea. Mesa took care of it. Said it was just a blown tube, that took out a resistor. All fixed and back to normal.
They blame everything on bad EL34s.
