I think for now headphones are the closest we will get. So that reminds me. I don't know if you saw my thread on the TC Electronics Mimiq but it is such a cool pedal. It copies your signal as you play and repeats it with a somewhat oscillating effect that can sound like two guitar players or a double track. It is hard to explain the effect but the pedal uses an algorithm to adjust the effect (delay) in and out to simulate human beings playing a riff together. It really shines with two amps. If you are standing center of the two amps the algorithm tricks your brain big time. So instead of 2 sources (2 cabs) it spreads your sound out as if there were maybe 5 sources. RaceU4her uses it in a lot of his clips and he has his cabs spread across the room but then mics them with SM57s.
Here is another shitty example. The effect is greater with headphones. In-room is very satisfying.
