Some artists have different tones, so be specific. Artist/Album/Song, or if it's from a Live gig... where/date/song

It's cool if you can only think of one that stands out, or have a long list with categorizes.

Nice, not many other fans around these parts.

I would have to say Facelift era AIC. My fav modded Marshall tone and one that's never quite been duplicated on record.

Others:

AIC-jar of flies

Gilmour-all of it!

Dream Theater-IIc+ tones

P.O.D.- the song "Satellite". Always loved those recto tones.

Sevendust- Animosity and Seasons. They were doing thick and tight heavy ass "djent" tones
before it was even a genre. To this day nothing sounds like the guitars on Animosity.

Metallica- Black. It was the beginning of the end for them, but the tones are legendary.

Queensryche- mindcrime/empire. Awesome.

Tool-Aenima and Lateralus

EVH II
Gary Moore in general
Slash - GNR Appetite
Metallica - Black Album
Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom

Lynch Back For the Attack
Gilmour-The Wall
VH1
Le Tekro-Intution
Sykes- Whitesnake-Whitesnake

So many more :)

ACDC - Any
Black Album
AIC Dirt
Incubus Science
Ozzy/Zakk No More Tears

Lynch - Back for the Attack
Lynch - Under Lock and Key
Malmsteen - Odyssey
Zakk Wylde - No Rest for the Wicked
Andy Timmons - Electric Gypsy

These tones are subject to change on a daily basis..except for Lynch. Those two will remian in the top 2 spots for me.

VH1 (started it all).
Ty Tabor (Gretchen Goes To Nebraska)
Ronnie Le Tekro (anything).
Stryper (Reason For the Season, anything really).
Yngwie Malmsteen (early stuff).

honorable mention:
Akira Takasaki (anything early).

Really? I never took you for a Lynch or Dokken fan ;)

At this particular moment:

VH - Light Up the Sky
Dokken - The Hunter
Skid Row - I Remember You (Solo) & Monkey Business rhythms
U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name
Steve Stevens - Top Gun Anthem

probably not very similar to what you guys consider holy grail...

Meshuggah - Nothing
Tesseract - One/Concealing Fate EP
Pantera - Great Southern Trendkill
The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal
Between The Buried and Me - Colors

:D

Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion
The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory
In Flames - Clayman
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor

Eric Johnson. CLiffs Of Dover.

Michael Schenker. Captain Nemo live.

Van Halen. Fair Warning album.

AC/DC. Back In Black.

Lynch's leads on Under Lock And Key.

Honorable Mention. Iron Maiden's tones on Powerslave and Peace Of Mind. Boston's first album. DiMartini Out Of The Cellar.

Tool - Undertow
Tool - Aenima
Tool - Salival
Tool - Lateralus
Tool - 10,000 Days

Adam Jones, guitarist for Tool, has a very unique tone. Despite that fact that his gear is relatively simple and well documented on the net...his tone is illusive. Must be in the fingers mostly.

J

Zakk Wylde - 1919 Eternal - Berzerkers, Mass Murder Machince
George Lynch - Lynch Mob - Wicked Sensation - No Bed Of Roses
Jake E. Lee - Retraced - Whiskey Train
Opeth - Watershed - Heir Apparent
Cavalera Conspiracy - Inflikted - Must Kill

And mine... of course!! :D

Edited to include song choices, though all these albums have many desirable guitar tones, with the exception of CC, which has similar/consistent tone throughout the album.

Jake E Lee - Badlands
Ritchie Blackmore- Burn
Robin Trower- Bridge of Sighs
Doug Aldrich- everything he does
Mick Mars -Dr Feelgood

I'm going to talk about live tones only as I'm not sure how many of my favorite album tones have had Mark Day approved post processing applied.

- Overkill - Live in Toronto 1988
- Metallica - Live in Hamilton ON 1989
- Wizard Metal/Modern Classic - standing onstage at an Econoline Crush sound check live in 1999 in a great sounding club
- Larry Dino - various basements
- Larry preamp into ??? (still working on my rig but its close)

Today...

Sykes - Blue Murder
Norum - Another Destination
Gary Moore - We want Moore! (Live)
Blackmore - Stranger in Us All
Yngwie - Odyssey

Black Sabbath ... the first 5 albums.
Tool .... Ænima and Under Tow
Beatles & Stones .... these whole catalogs are a encyclopedia of great guitar sounds.

Number one .... and pretty much everyone sees as the sound of "rock guitar"....

AC/DC Malcolm Young .... personally I much prefer the stuff with Bon Scott.

Firehouse-Firehouse
Megadeth-Youthanasia (rythm sound)
Zakk Wylde-No Rest for the Wicked
Metallica-Black Album (rythms)
Down-NOLA

probably a zillion others that are close but those are the five that stick in my head the most.
