AJFA is Metallica's best album...fight me

To my ears, there comes a point where a song becomes so fast that it's obnoxious and can't be enjoyed. But also, makes it very difficult to play live. I've rarely seen them play Dyer's Eve live because it's ridiculously fast and tricky. I much prefer songs like Frayed which have very tricky rhythmic parts (see 4:04) inside the middle, but the majority of the song is more accessible to my ears and fingers.

Yeah dyers eve isn't even remotely considered a ridiculous tempo by thrash metal standards.

@BABMusic

for reference Dyer's Eve is about 195 bpm

Even relatively well known bands like Sepultura are faster than dyers eve as a matter of routine

"beneath the remains" is about 240 bpm

But if you get into the genre defining insider stuff, it's almost all that fast

Morbid Saint - "Damien" hovers between 250-260 bpm

Razor - "Brass Knuckles" gets up to 280ish in the pogo part around 1:50

Kreator - "pleasure to kill" is generally performed around 250

My favourite. Haven’t listened to it in many years though. I actually always liked the production. Felt like I was really in some tonal world there. Kind of a fake sounding sci fi type world. Now I’m older and everyone has told me I’m wrong, so I guess I have to say Master of Puppets was their best to fit in.
haha so true. never though it sounded that bad until i read it on the interent:D. depends on you speakers if it sounds thin or just brutal and evil, scooped. ears accustom pretty quick

a bit repetitive, yes...

hate the sound of Kill em All:D (i guess low budget).
but not as bad at as anything from death magnetic...
(no budget exussed accepted anymore!)

kill ‘em all is one of those albums completely let down by tone. Both the recording and the instruments. Some good songs. Just sound terrible.

Unless you are Van Halen.
it's not their best sounding one to my ears, but pretty great for a debut album. doesn't live up to the hype and crazy tone chasing though:D
but please don't turn this into a van halen thread!

there are a few exception to this rule:
GnR appetite for destruction is mind blowing for a debut album.
same for the
1st rage against the machine record.
just from the top of my head.
we should open a new thread for this...

Actually would be a good thread. Jeff Buckley Grace, Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced, Led Zeppelin...Hanson :ROFLMAO:

Not a bad idea at all.

Don't get me wrong, I love Kill 'em All. The tone fits the songs, and totally fits in with their early more Motorheadesque vibe.

The first album, I think, wears that influence proudly on its sleeve. It was Ride the Lightning where they developed their own first signature sound that became its own genre defining production benchmark. It's fair to say that after that album came out everybody on the scene realized it was time to up their game.

and yes the time this was recorded, there wasn't much to chose from. Yes i know, but i easily forget that part. When i started there where already high gainers around. It's was quite the opposite. too many options...

Posts like this should get an auto perma-ban.

Fwiw being able to play the rhythms for songs like Blackened, Dyer's Eve, Battery, Damage Inc., Breadfan, The Prince, and shit like Slayer Jesus Saves, and Fucking Hostile by Pantera was a source of pride for me because of how demanding they are on your picking hand.

It sucked reading how Metallica recorded slower and then sped the tapes up, but in a way great for my playing learning to actually play that fast lol

Is that really true? I've never heard that before. They would have to tune down to D, and even if they sped up the tape, it wouldn't increase the speed very much from D to E.

This might be more your speed.
