I know this is voiced closely to one of these I am guessing the Soldano?

For me is more near to Soldano but with more bass and gain and 5153 lack dynamic and it lacks in the wonderfull Soldano mids..

try before you buy. i wanted to love that amp but it was ok at best. i'd much rather own a peavey 5150.

+1

It felt weak to me. It didn't have that chest pounding thump the 5150 has. I'll give it credit for being cleaner but that's not enough for me to buy the thing.

the amplifier is stupid easy to play at any volume. it lacks balls though, it has none. definately a try before you buy

I had the exact opposite experience with mine and have owned SLO's and XTC's and 5150's and 51502 - I would take the 5153 over all of them. Mine has tons of balls (I also had a bias mod done to bias it correctly they are cold coming from the factory). I would say its more Soldano, to me a SLO is useless because it has to be really loud to sound good, had a god awefull efx loop and the clean channel sux. But that one sound cranked to the hilt on the gain channel is awesome.
For Bogners I like the new SHiva Anniv with KT88's.

it does sound best with the 5150 III cab...in my experience by the way.

some have liked it better with higher power speakers...so i would love to hear one with 65 or 100 watt scumbacks in a 4x12.

try one out if you can...

You can pull some nice Bogner-ish AIC tones out the 5153. I love it. I would take it over a 5150 any day for my playing style. Super easy to play leads and can get quite brutal. Channel 2 is a great crunch sound as well, and the clean channel is very usable.

Maybe not as much grunt as a 5150, but IMO a much better tone. Poor man's XTC seems pretty accurate to me.

My 5150 III has been a problem child since I got it. The one I have is THE definition of a lemon. In fact, it's in the shop right now getting a tube socket replaced. I don't think I've played it more than 1/2 dozen times without a problem.

So, in comparing my XTC with the 5150 III please take into consideration that I don't think the 5150 III I have has ever been right. That being said, to me the XTC tone is just more sophisticated. MY 5150 III is way too bright for my taste and not nearly as smooth or chewy. My XTC can get loud without getting overly harsh while the 5150 seems to get harsh very quickly as I turn up the volume.

I have no experience with a Soldano.

technically, the lead channel is a SLO100/peavey 5150 crossover with some improvements: more fizz rollof and A LOT more bass cut in the first two gain stages (this makes a huge difference in articulation and clarity without taking out the punch)

definitely closer to the soldano than to a XTC

the XTC is a JCM 2203 with an extra gain stage and a tricky tweaked power amp
completely different amps

Thanks I already have a 5153 but was curious about a splurge on a Bogner 101b or Freidman, SLO

In a blind tone test with the same settings, mic position, and cabinet, I thought the 5150 III was the SLO and vice versa. I now own a 5150 III and LOVE it ;)

That sucks Al. I've had the exact opposite experience from a reliability standpoint. Owned the 5150 III for almost 2 years now. Played well over 100 shows with it and it's performed flawlessly for me. I agree, it is a bright amp and I keep my Highs and Presence dialed pretty low on the gain channels as a result, but still completely digging the amp. Hope yours comes back from the shop 100%.

Hey Jim,

Always glad to see you chime in. :D Yeah, as I mentioned, I think I just got a lemon. Bob Konopka is putting the new socket in and is also going to take a look around under the "hood" to see if anything else looks outta whack.

100 shows with the 5150 III...'sounds like you've been gig'n a bit...'hope you're having fun!
