Soldano SLO 100

Yeah the SLO is one of those amps where in person one with at least semi decent ears will get pretty quickly why it’s considered a great amp, but I still didn’t keep the 3 I had (including one from 1989)

For most of what I liked about it for leads I preferred the Purpleface and Cornford RK100. For riffs and more powerchord type stuff I prefer mostly those same 2 amps, Lenz Hot Chili, Steavens Poundcake, or the right modded or boosted stock Marshall. None of these amps 100% do exactly the SLO thing but after AB’ing so many times it just got hard to justify keeping them. I didn’t really have an answer of what scenarios I’d go with them anymore

There’s a ton more of Marshall’s for sale then Soldano SLO 100. As for the so called hyped up(negative)Soldano thing I can say the same thing about marshalls ,many Marshall’s were modded because players weren’t happy with the sound or throw a overdrive-distortion pedal up front because players weren’t happy with the sound. The Soldano SLO doesn’t need to be modded and in my opinion doesn’t need an overdrive pedal in front it has all the gain that you need unless your into extreme metal.

C’mon man, get real. Are you really gonna compare the volume of sales of Marshall versus Soldano and how that ends up in the used market? Soldano’s don’t need to be modded? Is that why so many ask for the SRV or Warren Haynes mods, or the depth control?
Also, at the height of Marshalls being modded, you could pick them up for $3-500 a piece and they were easily found. How many people do you think feel comfortable modding an amp that costs as much as the Soldano, even back in the 90’s. Also where their brain is telling them they bought it as a final destination amp, which doesn’t allow much room for being open to start messing with it.
And a lot of people use those very same boost pedals with an SLO. Many of the big names associated with one, boosted the clean channel or when it was set to crunch and didn’t actually use the overdrive channel as their main dirty sound.

I’m real I know what you’re saying, the SRV mod and the Haynes mod(depth knob) were done at the Soldano factory just little tweaks.

There were also a ton more Marshall’s made, not an apples to apples comparison there. They were modded or boosted with pedals mostly because guys liked the tone but wanted more gain. Why Marshall didn’t make better amps to address is beyond me. In either case, there’s no need to defend the SLO. It’s a great amp that isn’t for everyone. There are amps I like more than the SLO’s I’ve had for where I feel they excel, but they all came out later on. SLO was first

A mod is a mod is a mod. Obviously those artists weren’t happy with the stock sound. It doesn’t matter who needs the mod.

Ok and, your not going to mod a Soldano SLO like you would do a complete mod on a Marshall if you know what I mean

When Marshall puts out a "modified" amp, their mods are not legit and complex enough and lots of shit slinging ensue because anyone and their brother can do it in 5 minutes for 2 bucks. When Soldano adds a switch to bypass the bright cap or a depth pot, "a mod is a mod is a mod". LOL

I'd rather call those "small tweaks" than mods. Like changing the 5881s to KT66s and adjusting the bias.

I consider it one of the greatest metal amps of all time. It is also one of the easiest to record with and just fits in a mix instantly with how the mids sit. I usually boost with an OD808 if I am going for a metalcore style tone. If I had to pick just one of my amps to keep it would probably be my SLO100. It is insanely versatile while also being dead simple. There is no music genre it can't do.

One of my favorite mixes with it:

One of my favorite Killswitch tracks. I think Joel used a modded SLO at one point too. Not sure if it was live or in the studio.

Jusr curious the positive(player)and the negative(player) of the Soldano SLO 100, The BS I read on forums about the Soldano SLO 100 this amp can do it all, from Van Halen 1 to what ever I mean, really …….wtf
Soldano SLO-100 is awesome! You can get lots of different guitar tones just look at the artists that play them. World class amp!

Guys! SLO is the best amp ever made. The loop isnt retarded at all, and it can do the most extreme death metal on the low input with the guitar volume rolled half back! Stop picking on @Lightning

Mods/tweaks were mentioned. Whenever I buy an SLO, removing the bright cap across the lugs of the gain pot on the lead channel is the first thing I do. This is all that the Haynes mod does. Once the chassis is pulled, it's litteraly a 10 second job with a soldering iron.

It's great for leads, okay to good for everything else. Tubby low end.

If you aren't a high level lead player, you probably won't get it.
I can't argue with this. I would never claim to be a high level lead player though :D If you like ultra tight low end the SLO isn't going to do that. I've heard worse though. That's where a boost helps. Yes, the lead channel has a ton of gain but much past halfway and it gets too compressed. Back it down and hit the front end and it keeps the gain a little more open and cleans up the low end a bit.
I wish the lead channel would stay as tight as the crunch because there's enough difference in gain to need both for things.

Definitely. I actually prefer the crunch channel of the SLO personally

If I go pass the lead channel halfway and it gets to compressed I turn the presence or treble up as for the low end being tight it’s tight in my opinion.

Yeah I also think it's plenty tight but for some people who like robotic/sterile/solid-state/Randall-RG100/Crate-VH140C/Fryette-UL tight, it might not be tight enough. I can understand that. I personnaly prefer it the way it is.
