Do you have to worry about physically rotating the rolls of 456 every now and then in storage?

So far it's been fine, I do flip them from time to time.

Just spent the afternoon going through some mics and pres, gonna post a vid later. Such a great experience. We also tracked to DAW and tape, so you can watch us making all the critical sound decisions and why. It'll be cool for any young guys just starting out with recording.

What makes ya think it's only the young guys starting out with recording

Peace,
V.

Exactly. What V said.
Personally, it took me until I was over 40 before I could finally afford decent recording gear... and it's still not even that good!
Mini tutorials like this are awesome. Thanks James!

Well cool then, I'm glad you guys are getting something out of these. Here's the video from today's mic, pre, compressor and tape selection.

Thanks man.

Finished lead vocals on 3 of the 5 tunes today. All is going well, it feels good. My goal is to have everything done and ready to mix by Thursday. Man the vocals sound so rich with tone and harmonics going to tape. We were listening back tonight to some of the takes and I was blown away by the sound. I'm really exited! It's kind of an eclectic bunch of old tunes that I wanted to get recorded and out of the way before I started writing new stuff. Some ballady, some almost country-ish and some pretty hard rock. I will post as things progress.

james, you've been a great resource for this board. i certainly wish you success with your album

Thanks man. Spent the afternoon shooting out some of my mics, pres and compressors to get my sound for the vocals.

Vintage Neumann U87>Vintage API312>Studer A800 (456 @ 30ips)>Apogee 16X

Would it be in poor taste to ask a man to "borrow" his Telefunken/Neumann U87?

that mic sounds amazing! thanks for the walk through James

Last day of lead vocals:

Sounds good, especially the bridge riff but I'm honestly not a fan of hard rockin' going into pretty choruses. Sounds like mixing Chris Cornell with insert English band here. Blame it on my heavy leanings to 70's Classic rock over 90's/2000's English rock, even though Muse is pretty interesting. I hear that gnarly riffing then want to hear a man step up and sing that shit and sometimes pretty seems anti-climatic. Plus knowing how rockin' you can get made it more so. Please don't take this harshly because I dig so much of what I see your play in your vids. Plus I really miss straight up balls out rock in today's music.

Yeah I hear ya, I'm kind of with ya but I've written and recorded 100s of songs and I'm just trying to do something different for me. I have a ton of slammin rock music and honestly I've enjoyed venturing out. It's a little weird not knowing how people who have grown accustomed to me screamin' will take it. Actually all 5 songs are kind of strange; ballads, country, pop etc.. I already told myself the next batch is gonna be slammin.

I know what you mean too. You just need to get it out and on "tape". I like so many approaches to guitar music, poppy and heavy, trying to express them in songs can get tricky. I like Missing Persons and Discharge equally. Now that's fucked up   Go with your gut and if you like it even more after repeated listens, roll with that bad boy.

Whoah, love the female harmonies man. So far the tune in #5 is my favorite but I've only seen a couple now. Great idea...

I've been watching these the past few days. Overall I think it sounds really good man and I've been enjoying the vids, particularly the guitar tracking one. I thought the guitars ended up sounding pretty fantastic. Only thing I don't quite get is the melody on the "LA" tune in the verses, over the Bb to Db part, I dunno if there's an intentional clash or it's just me... *shrug*

Watched the last couple of vids, very cool to see the layers and hear them both solo'd and in context.
