New Mixes:

Why Were You Kissin Him – 15ips

Why Were You Kissin Him – 30ips

I Tried - Digital Bounce
Sounding really good.
I just find the hi hat a little clangy and overpowering. It needs to come down a bit in the mix or you should remove some of the mids so it shines more.
Sorry it just stood out to me.

I Tried is the clangy one....it sounds better on Why
On I Tried I just found myself thinking I would want to shine that up and place it in the mix a little smoother. It was drawing my attention the whole song, which it shouldn't be.

I Tried isn't done and also was an internal protools bounce and not a layback to tape. That makes a huge difference and we mix with the layback to tape in mind, meaning a hair brighter, cuz the tape darkens slightly. But I will look at the tunes and check out the hh. Thanks

Interesting. So you recorded on 2 inch analog, dumped to Pro Tools for mixing, then dump to analog 2 track for master master mix, then will dump back to digital for CD production?

Yeah it's a little whacky:
1. track to tape and dump in real time to protools
2. mix OTB using a Chandler EMI mixing and a tone of outboard gear
3. run final mixes back to tape and as it records to tape it dumps back to protools
4. then we take a 44/24 file to our masterer

The mixing of 'Why Were You Kissin Him'
sebby123 from rig-talk is in the video

That's interesting. That is a lot of A to D, D to A, A to D converting.
I love tape color. I have an old reel to reel machine here that I've used it for final mixes. But I think it's way better to start with analog than to try to get it later....you just can't get that sound when you start in digital first.

Isn't that just typical. You have posted soundclips of 4/5 songs, but not the one I really would like to hear. Heh. That trainbeat on I Miss Home is amazing, and the same goes for the guitars. And to top it off, the vocals ain't to shabby either ;) It might just be rock 'n roll, but it's good rock 'n roll.

Yeah I didn't make a burn yet. Will on Monday.

Finished mixing today. Made 15ips, 30ips and digital bounces of all 5 songs for mastering. A few of the tunes have alternate mixing ie vocal up, bass down etc.. I'm really happy with the outcome and appreciate all the mixing tips from the guys here. Many of the suggestions were implemented. I've been listening to the final mixes tonight and am really happy. I'm ready to get this music mastered and get it out there. We master Friday. Thanks for all the help.

James

Really looking forward to it. Can't get "I Miss Home" out of my head.

James,
I've sure learned a lot from the glimpses of footage you've shared with us. I know there is a lot of hard work that went into this that wasn't captured and put on YouTube, and if it were possible to show us, there would be a hell of a lot more appreciation for you and those behind the scenes who've put so much effort into making this project. Where I live, there is no access to people in the recording world "know." watching your video is a tutorial of sorts for me and I appreciate you taking the time to "demystify" some of the unknowns that continue to plague me... Thank you kindly.

Man thanks Jimmie, it has been fun doing this. I kake these videos cuz I love watching these kinds of videos.

Here's the video of mix finalization day. I'm going to go in this morning and do a few more bounces of alternate mixes and that should be it, off to mastering on Friday.

Here are the tracks, the first 2 I opted to just go with a mastering I did at my studio with an L3.
