When they were touring for Aenima early on, he had just the Dual Recto and Marshall, which ironically I always thought sounded better than his Diezel setup.

I agree %100.

I saw the very first show the did after they recorded Aenima. They did 4 songs off it 3 weeks before it came out. That is what I remember Maynard saying anyway. I was at the first show where the did songs off of Aenima.

Adam Jones has said he liked the Mesa / Marshall sound better.
But the rest of the band felt the Diezel / Marshall sound fit better in the mix.

Adam fought the change.

Funny thing is James Hetfield said he likes the sound of the Mark II better than the Diezel's after they did the last album.

2...There was a crazy internet rumor he would stick it in the freezer to help slow down the aging process

I've been hearing that rumor forever.
I wonder if it really works?

Well, there is something to the fact that electrical circuits start to become less efficient at higher temperatures, this is why dedicated servers typically have climate controlled rooms.

Now as to how much of an effect, and if it's worth the effort, idk. I would guess it's more trouble than it's worth.

Its a 78ish jmp wired superlead specs with a few minor changes he runs it dimmed and does jumper the channels with a cable. The amp is biased to 25ma and uses jj el34's when I had my hands in it last. Its a great sounding head.

Good GAWD that must be loud. I have a 1959 800 and I can barely turn that fucker up at all. Does biasing it that low allow it to be cranked?

Controlled environment is a good idea.

Ever freeze a tomato ? I do not think freezing is a good idea.

Amp in the freezer thing was a joke. When Adam says during interviews that his name is Julio and he drives the tour bus, do you all believe him, too? :)

Opiate was all Superbass.

Undertow was Superbass and Mesa.

Aenima was Superbass and Mesa and maybe something else in the studio. Toward the late-middle of the tour, he brought on the Diezels....I think.

Lateralus was Superbass, Diezel, Mesa, Sunn Beta, and something else in the studio. Live, it was Diezel/Superbass.

10,000 Days was Superbass, Diezel, Peavy, Bogner, and Rivera. Live, it's Superbass Diezel.

I thought he ran 3 amps, Diezel, Marshall, Mesa all at once......?

That was back during the later part of the Aenima tour. Currently, he runs the Superbass and VH-4.

I saw them on the 10,000 Days tour and he had 3 half stacks on stage. The Super Bass and two VH4's. I thought I read somewhere that the second VH4 was just a back up, but I'm not 100% certain on that. They all were mic'd. The VH4's were sitting on top of Mesa cabs. Not sure if they were the traditional or standard ones. The Super Bass was on top of some unmarked cab that looked like an old Marshall.

In the studio for 10,000 Days there were typically 3 amps per track/take. His guitar was split to the VH4 and the Superbass and was also split to one of the other various amps. I've read that in a few different places.

The other VH-4 is, indeed, a backup. One is a silver-face the other a blue-face.

I don't like repeating myself, but for 10,000 Days the amps were:

Marshall Superbass
Diezel VH-4
Bogner Uberschall
Peavy of some sort
Rivera K-Tre
And probably a few others.

They were all combined in different ways for different tracks/takes. There were usually AT LEAST three amps running at any given time in the studio. This is straight from Adam's and the Producer's mouths.

I believe he uses the standard Mesa cabs. The other cab is a Marshall. All with Vintage 30's.

The real trick to the huge sound is using one (or more) amp preamp distortion (master volume) and one amp poweramp distortion (no master volume). Adam has always used the Marshall for the poweramp distortion amp.

I have been doing this for years. With a bunch of different amps. Some combinations work better than others. You need to fine tune both amps to work together right. The attack envelopes and dynamics of the amps can be very different. This well feel strange at first.

I really wish I could run a dual rig. I'm just sick of my Bad Cat. I want either a Mako or Diezel...or both! :)

I would think your Bad Cat would be killer set up as the power distortion amp. You just need to turn the master all the way up (10) to get the same effect.

Oh man, the cab couldn't handle that: open-back 2x12. I just don't like the sound of the Bad Cat anymore - it's just too smooth of an amp. I want something more aggressive and raunchy.
