I "think" the Dorado is voiced somewhat darker....

There is a difference in the preamps, I'm just not sure exactly what, Andrew has a new 4 channel preamp coming out that has both the Makoplex and Dorado for 2 of the channels, so I'm assuming that there is a difference in the preamps.

When they were touring for Aenima early on, he had just the Dual Recto and Marshall, which ironically I always thought sounded better than his Diezel setup.

I agree %100.

I saw the very first show the did after they recorded Aenima. They did 4 songs off it 3 weeks before it came out. That is what I remember Maynard saying anyway. I was at the first show where the did songs off of Aenima.

Adam Jones has said he liked the Mesa / Marshall sound better.
But the rest of the band felt the Diezel / Marshall sound fit better in the mix.

Adam fought the change.

Funny thing is James Hetfield said he likes the sound of the Mark II better than the Diezel's after they did the last album.

I've heard this too, but in a magazine I own (have to check name etc, got it at a 2nd hand shop really cheap) he stated the Diezel Vh-4 was his favourite amp.
And jones had the DR for the Lateralus tour. The marshall cabinet is said to have blackback celestions, g12m or g12h who knows. the mesa cabs look like traditional compared to the marshalls cab size.

I saw him use all three. Diezel, Rectifier, Marshall on the second show of the Lateralus tour. I think he was switching around what he uses depending on the show back then. I read around the last tour the Marshall he uses is his favorite amp ? I think this maybe part of misinformation these guys are known for. When I read about Mesa / Marshall thing it was right after the change. I think we all know how it takes time to get into a new sound sometimes. I like all three amps for different things myself. One thing that help get closer to his tone for me was the Ibanez flanger ... FL9 ? The yellow one. I really like that flanger.

He has talked about all the voices that come from using the two volumes to blend the distortion. If you dime that amp with a JB pickup it can mud out.
There is a fair amount of distortion at 10/11 o'clock. A lot of the recorded sounds I get around this up to 2.
There are all kinds of phase things that go on when you blend the volumes. Depending on what input you use I set the volumes very different.
How hot the preamp tubes are can make you set it up a lot different.
I have a feeling he did not always dime it all the time.
.....And I am sure you know he uses the volume on his guitar all the time to change his sound.

Ever freeze a tomato ? I do not think freezing is a good idea.

Me too, seems like the condensation from warming it up after being frozen would do more harm than good. maybe he has a method for bringing it back to room temp?

What did you pick up .... a head ?
What one ?

The amps I now own like that are a THD Bivalve, Flexi and Plexi.
The channels are jumped in the Plexi like Adams amps and it gets that sound of the old non master Marshall's.
It has no master. This one is very much like that sound.
I do not use the master on the Flexi much. I use a Hot Plate to control the volume on the amps.

Cabs ..... the three I use a lot are a ....
(Celestion's in all)
2x12 with 85's ~ they are a lot like the 100's a lot of people like. With better mids to my ears.
4x12 with greenbacks on top and Vintage 30's on the bottom.
4x12 with H30's on top and Vintage 30's on the bottom.

I got a '78 JMP Super Bass . NMV, 100watt. Very good condition besides a couple of knobs, and got it real real cheap . I thuoght you had a super bass from reading that post. What volume are you running in the plexi to get that sound?

I'm not sure which cab to pair it with.

I have had a few Marshall's all older than yours.
This is just one made by THD.
You well want a THD Hot Plate or something to control the volume.(A must have with this kind of amp for me.)
You can jump the channels by plugging into the bright high gain.
Then use a small cable from bright low gain input to normal high input.
Doing this well let you use both volumes. This is done on the inside of Adams amp. What is better about having it done on the out side is you can jump it different ways. (different bright and normal combinations).
Or not use it at all. You probably find the best sounds not using it.

Check out different combinations of the 10 o'clock to 3 with most amps.
Adam uses a lot of mids in his sound. Turn the mids up higher than you think. Your ear well get use to it pretty fast.
This well effect the feel and tone. You well have more dynamic range and cut threw the mix better.

This well effect the feel and tone. You well have more dynamic range and cut threw the mix better.

I actually had a friend over the other week playing my rig and the first thing he said was how my tone sounded and felt just like Tool. All I was running was my JSX with a generous amount of mids, through a V30 loaded Mesa 4x12. It was unintentional, but when he started to play a bunch of Tool riffs it became more apparent. I would say it was closer to 10,000 Days tone than Anema though.
