omg, is it the same "last PTP Makoplex" that's been making the rounds all over the net for the past 3 years or so?

I was doing the 3 amp rig for a bit. 2 has been my standard for a bit.

I keep changing it around.

Poweramp distortion ..... THD ~ Plexi, Bivalve, Flexi. Hot plate to control volume.

Preamp distortion ..... Mesa ~ Tremoverb, IV, Trident, VHT ~ Sig X.

I mix all of them in different combinations. But seem to get the biggest sound from one poweramp distortion and one preamp distortion. Each with a 4x12.

I wonder if anyone working in a music store has run a shit-ton of amps together just for the hell of it? I know I would. I'd turn every amp in the store on and rock the freakin' windows out.

The Superbass is where the magic is.

And while 10,000 days does have quite a few amps on it, part of Jambi sounds almost like dry tracks of VH4 to me.

Amp in the freezer thing was a joke. When Adam says during interviews that his name is Julio and he drives the tour bus, do you all believe him, too? :)
Live, it's Superbass Diezel.

I can confirm the live set up post 10000 days. He had that rig just after the album was released.

As for the Tool hype; I have never seen a band as into their own hype as them, I'm rather impressed at the amount of crap they do manage to float. I know a good dozen people who are full blown Tool Army members and have dished out the $100 to have access to the forums. I mean, I love music and all, but god damn.... I've never been that deep into anything.

I don't think the band members are into themselves as much as people think they are. What happens, is they make lots of jokes and sarcastic comments during interviews and people think they are being serious...especially a lot of the "die-hard" fans.

People just need to relax and use commone sense a little bit more. I've talked to both Adam and Danny and they seemed to be really down-to-earth guys with good senses of humor.

It's the people who believe the crap the band members say that need to chill out.

In any event, I think Adam's guitar tone is fantastic. There are times when I don't like it in the mix of certain songs. But, on the whole, it's perfect for the feel/style of the band. That's the most important part...that it fits what is being played.

Its a 78ish jmp wired superlead specs with a few minor changes he runs it dimmed and does jumper the channels with a cable. The amp is biased to 25ma and uses jj el34's when I had my hands in it last. Its a great sounding head.

Good GAWD that must be loud. I have a 1959 800 and I can barely turn that fucker up at all. Does biasing it that low allow it to be cranked?

No I can change the Bias on my THD Flexi easy on the back.
25 a tube is a little low. 30/32 would be more normal.
It changes the attack / tone / punch / etc. But not a volume difference I have noticed.

Opiate was all Superbass.

Undertow was Superbass and Mesa.

Aenima was Superbass and Mesa and maybe something else in the studio. Toward the late-middle of the tour, he brought on the Diezels....I think.

Lateralus was Superbass, Diezel, Mesa, Sunn Beta, and something else in the studio. Live, it was Diezel/Superbass.

10,000 Days was Superbass, Diezel, Peavy, Bogner, and Rivera. Live, it's Superbass Diezel.

The Sunn was a old ~ Model T. I had a 1976. It had 4x6550 at 150 watts. It has about as much gain as JCM 800 with a huge bottom end.
Wish I did not sell that one.

I think he used a different Sunn for Lateralus than on 10,000 Days. One of them was a Sunn Beta Lead from what Joe Barresi said. I don't know much about those things. Never even seen one.

I threw Enema in the trash about 3 weeks after buying it, mostly because there was too much mumbo jumbo in between and in the music, but I really like a lot of 10k Days, minus the mumbo jumbo. Plus, I was told they were "the modern day Rush," so I was a little thrown by that too.

In any event, Tool gets one of the best audio productions around. A buddy of mine has a ridiculously sounding "audiophile" system and both the big Enema and 10k Days sound pretty freaking spectacular on the system. Very little of what I've heard on that system, and I've heard a lot, sounds like the Tool production. Listening on that system helped me to realize how tight they are as a band.

I can understand the cult of Tool.

I thought the same way about all the "filler" tracks on their albums when I first started listening to them. But, as I listened more and more, I grew to like them because they make the entire album feel like one, homogeneous production, rather than just a disc with a bunch of songs on it. It's almost like a film or a story.

Their production is crazy good, though. I'd love to hear what that thunder storm in 10,000 Days (Wings Part II) sounds like on an "auiophile" system.

I used to own a Sunn Beta Lead. It was a solidstate amp... But it did sound really good to me at the time. I could get a great Boston sound out of it!

Oh, I'm not knocking their music or studio work, not by a long shot, I am a tool fan. I don't know a ton about studio work, but I know enough to realize they put 10x the effort into each recording than almost anyone else.

Brother, you and I have this conversation before, so this is pretty much rehashing my opinion, but this is exactly why I dont like 10,000 Days:

Way too much filler, not enough killer. And the tone on most of the songs (besides Jambi) has the fizzy top end. IMO, of course. Then again, Tool kept me sane when I was at boarding school. I remember singing to myself in Maynard-esque melodies while I did manuel labor. These days, I almost resent them. It has been a weird journey for me when it comes to this band. Ill always love them, but 10,000 days (to me) is rehashed guitar and bass riffs from every album before that. The only thing that separates (again, to me) is the vocal melodies, and the new syncopated drum beats that are more advanced than the records before it.

Of course its easy for me to stand behind this keyboard and talk shit about a band that Ive adored since I was 10 years old.

This is exactly what is different about the disc.

To me, each and every disc shows growth. Yes, Adam still uses drop d all the time, and yes he basically uses the same themes each time, but its his fingerprint.

What makes each disc better than the last is the fact that they are able to up the ante in the rhythms and the interplay between all 4 guys.

You can learn a song from Opiate in one day.

You can learn a song from Aenima in a week.

You can learn a song from Lateralus in three weeks.

And you can learn 10,000 Days in a month.

And I freaking dig it.

When they were touring for Aenima early on, he had just the Dual Recto and Marshall, which ironically I always thought sounded better than his Diezel setup.

I agree %100.

I saw the very first show the did after they recorded Aenima. They did 4 songs off it 3 weeks before it came out. That is what I remember Maynard saying anyway. I was at the first show where the did songs off of Aenima.

Adam Jones has said he liked the Mesa / Marshall sound better.
But the rest of the band felt the Diezel / Marshall sound fit better in the mix.

Adam fought the change.

Funny thing is James Hetfield said he likes the sound of the Mark II better than the Diezel's after they did the last album.
I've heard this too, but in a magazine I own (have to check name etc, got it at a 2nd hand shop really cheap) he stated the Diezel Vh-4 was his favourite amp.
And jones had the DR for the Lateralus tour. The marshall cabinet is said to have blackback celestions, g12m or g12h who knows. the mesa cabs look like traditional compared to the marshalls cab size.
Undertow... who knows if he used the DR, live in 93 he had 2 non master volume marshalls...http://img.skitch.com/20080417-cgtxpx4u ... review.jpg
